Default MISSED a DANDY last night

My Buddy put me on a good spot where the night before they saw a nice buck (wall mounter) and a spike come out. I setup about 15 yards upwind to where I thought they would come out and sure enough he came out about 20 yards farther down. I estimated that area to be about 40 yards earlier in the night on the tree line, so when he came out I used my 40 yard pin and aimed a little low. Shot,,,,,,zing right over his back. DANG!<img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle> I walked it off where he stood when I shot and he was only 31 yards. he was 6 yards out from the tree line and the tree line was only 37 yards. BUMMER! He would have made a very nice buck and would have been the biggest buck I would have harvest to this point. I have to work on my yardage skills some more. I have been shooting in my yard by just walking around and just estimating yardage. Thought I had it down. I always forget to add adrenaline to the mix... Next time I will walk off the distances on potential shots. Every time I encounter deer I learn. God I love this sport.

Wooly Im sorry to hear about your yardage loss. I and others like yourself have walked around our yards, 3d bowshoots and club grounds and it seem that we do preety well. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the adrenaline mix. Thats why we miss. Hunt hard and you will reap your rewards. Hope to hear you get that buck soon.

Ouch, that sure does hurt. I had a dandy walk out on me the other night...thirty yards or so to my right. But he never came any closer. To me, that was almost as bad as a miss. You get the adrenaline going....and then nothing. Oh well...it was good while it lasted. And I've always got tomorrow....and so do you.

that is why I carry a range finder so I can check out different objects and judge yardages from there. But it never fails last year a doe was standing 25 yards in a spot that I haden't used my rangefinder and I guessed her for 30 and it went over her back, but luckily she came back to a spot that I knew was 17 and she tasted great.
As Caliper said on a 3D range we do fine but on a 3D range we are not 20 feet in the air and most 3D targets are smaller than real animals

good luck and God bless

thats a bummer. but thats why we go back. what I do is measure out diff. yardages. 20, 25, 30. and then I pace off with a normal pace. when I get to the woods and find a spot I try to pace off to I find a tree to my liking. or if I find a tree I pace off those yardages and hang a ribbon to give me an idea of my yardage. hope this helps ya. good luck to ya. keep up with it and dont give up your time will come and youll appreciate it more

Hehe! Sounds like you had a good time! That's why they call it bowhunting and not shooting. You bust your butt with focused practice, diligent scouting, and ritualistic preparations. Yet when the moment of truth arrives, you never know what will happen. Thank God for that really, for if they day ever came when we could guarantee a kill with every shot there wouldn't be reason left to hunt. I know ya kind of kick yourself in the tail over those missed shots, but those encounters do make for fond memories.

By the way, where was the spike through all this?

Did the buck bust you? If not then chances are he will be back in that area. He will be more cautious but he will be back. Good luck and we want to see pics.
