Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Since hunting season is a few months away I was wondering what people prefer to use while hunting. Face paint, headnet or nothing. Be specific, why do you use what you do and what brand do find works best for you?
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I prefer the camo paint - even in the late December season.
I have never been able to stand having a headnet or facemask on, though during the August bear season I tend to wear a full headnet to keep the mosquitos at bay. |
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I wear a full face mask. Bugs are bad problem early in the season.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I don't remember the brand name but the bow season up here in Saskatchewan starts labour day so I use a 3/4 face net to help with the tormenting bugs. If I didn't have to contend with the bugs I would most likely stay with the mask, quick and easy.

RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I have a headnet for early season, then a camo bandana that I use later in the season. You have to have a headnet in the early season in Virginia. The $*#&%@ mosquitos will pick you up and fly away with you! [&:]

RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I USUALLY have a full screen headnet for bugs, but I have taken many deer without anything on but my hat. I have forgotten my mask or dropped it walking in to the woods. So I look from behind my bow and the deer have looked right at me and knew nothing. I guess its all preference. I have had alot of success both ways. I would like camo paint but it seems to just get all over everything and I hate trying to scrub it off.

RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
face paint is best. Face mask/head net can get in the way of the shot
nothing makes your face stand out really brite and vivid |
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I too like the Face Paint the best. I don't like a lot of hunting videos/shows when the host and other bowhunters don't have anything covering there face or hands.[:@] But yet there decked out in the best camo minus the face and hands. That is a pet peeve of mine.

RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Face paint all the way. Hate scrubbing it all off after a long day hunting though, always find a bit more :D
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
i have used a face mask several times but have gone to going no mask and i keep the bow in front of my face when deer come in ,have had very good luck doing this ,coupled with stand placement
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Go With the Face paint! I have had nothing but good luck with paint.. it stays on all day and you never have to worry about your string ripping a face mask off!!!
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
if u get the tight ones i cantremeber what its calledbut i deff wont now wear a facemask
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
FYI - charcoal works great as face paint
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
use to use face paint. then I went to a head net that I could still use my kisser with. Now I went to a peep, and I use a scent lok hood. I didn't like the face paint because it was too much of a pain to get off if I wanted to stop in somewhere on the way home from the woods.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Will wear a head net when the skeeters are bad, but prefer facepaint- it just feels right. Kinda like getting into the spirit of the hunt.
BTW, unscented baby wipes will take off the face paint and is pretty much odor less. |
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I use one of the commercial scarf types. Fits tight, easy to roll down in the heat and helps keep me warm when its cold.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
i usually have a face mask on but it's mostly to keep the skeeters away from my face...when the skeeters aren't bad i really like the face paint...it's cooler (temperature wise) than face masks.....once i had to mix soda (didn't have water) and dirt cause i forgot my face mask and my paint...called in my first turkey that morning.:D
datamax~ you are sooooo right about charcoal. i like using pieces of a burnt tree...works great!!! |
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Full face nets. I like the fact that I dont have to wash anything off my face and I cant "run out" of a face mask. I think it's very important to have your face covered.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
when i wear my 3d stuff i use the face veil that it has in it. it's the bug proof stuff. definately helps alot. if i'm not wearing that i'll either go with or without the headnet. it depends what time of year and whether i'm on the ground or in a tree. i've tried the facepaint but it's too much of a pain to get off. but that's just me.

fACE Paint
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Scent-Lok hoods. I have several of them and rotate their use regularly.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Scent Lok hood. Wide enough in the front that i can see out of. During the winter, i wear a beanie hat or a stocking hat to keep warm under it. I can't wear face paint, if i do, i break out like mad. I feel naked when i dont wear a face mask.

RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Headnet early for bugs then paint later.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Head Net. Kinda strange stopping at McDonalds on the way home wearing burnt cork or paint...
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I like a full face, camo cover.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
face net
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I wear a 3/4 face mask with a camo hat during the warmer parts of the season, and a full knit facemask/stocking hat to keep my dome warm when it's cold out.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
It comes down to how many beers I have in me and just how ugly she is. The worst is a Tammy-Faye Baker. Believe me when I say face paint doesn't even help. You need to break out 2 bags. Sorry wrong board on that comment.
I grow a full beard after one week of not shaving and just get real high in my tree based on the leaves. If they are still up I'm 20+ in the air. If it's after they have fallen I'm 30+. |
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I use a full face mask or net depending on the season and the game I am after.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
On really warm days I use face paint. Cheapo black halloween makeup. On colder days I have a "neckwarmer" thing that I pull up under my eyes, so I basically look like a ninja. It pulls down out of the way quickly and easily, even at full draw.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Face paint for me:D.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I use make up. It's very cheap per application and it will not shine. I put on a base coat (usually dark grey) with a sponge and then use face paint with a brush to paint on camo patterns. It's fast, cheap and easy to apply. And it won't flake, cake, or peel off while hunting.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I go with face paint since I use a kisser button. A mask or net hampers me from getting my proper anchor point.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Headnet or some form of pull-down knit cap in colder weather.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I've used a face mask so long that I don't even realize it's there. Face paint tends to bother me.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
Either a mask—or nothing. Though the "nothing" usually occurs when I lose or forget the mask.
I too have killed deer without a mask—but I've also been busted on many occasions without it. Back in March, I had a few friends from GA come up to IL to scout some areas of Shawnee that they want to hunt this coming season. On the second morning, myself and one of them set up along the edge of a grown up field where we had seen 7 deer the previous day. The other member of the group set up about a 1/4 mile East of us. Later that morning as the other guy was moving to our location to meet up with us—he got to the treeline at the edge of the field and stopped to look for us. Needless to say, he had no problem spotting us. He could see the "glare" of our faces from over 90 yards away. For what it's worth, we were on the ground—so it may very well not have been as noticeable if we were in a stand—but from the ground, it was extremely easy to locate us. After that, I decided I'll not "skip" the mask in the future. Every little detail counts! |
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
3-d leafy material sewn onto scent lok liner head cover.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I personally like face paint. Bugs or temperature are not a problem so a face mask is not a must. And I don't care for the obstruction of the masks while shooting.
|
RE: Face paint, headnet or nothing?
I hate head nets and face masks for bowhunting but use them. Head net for skeeter season. Grow a beard to hide my face and for warmth the rest of the season. Wife hates it but it works for me. Once snow flies, I go to a white face mask. Do most of my hunting from the ground so white is a must. If I should find myself in a tree, I wear a brown or gray face mask pulled up unless the temps are below zero.

I just grow a beard.
