Default arrow weight?

I am a begginer bow hunter and want to know what arrow weight is best for my 65lb bow to hunt whitetails? I have read and heard heavy arrows can be good for penetration.

Thanks

Consider that most manufacturers require a total arrow weight of 5 gr/lb of draw weight for warranty purposes. In your case that means at least a 325 gr arrow, which includes the shaft, insert, nock, fletching, and point.

That being said, depending on your draw length, almost any arrow you choose in the proper spine will be heavy enough for any deer sized game.

Assuming a 100 gr point, 20 gr for fletching, 12 for a nock, and 15 for the insert, your arrow shaft itself would have to weigh in the neighborhood of 175 gr. Also, assuming a 28" shaft, it would have to weigh 6.25 grains per inch. Most shafts spined correctly for your bow will weigh much more than this, probably closer to 8.5 grains per inch, as in the case of a Gold Tip XT 5575.

As you can see, if you're within these parameters it's going to be pretty hard to choose an arrow that is too light for the bow. That being said, most guys like a slightly heavier arrow to ensure better penetration. A lighter arrow will naturally give more speed and flatter trajectory, but at average deer hunting distances trajectory won't be much of an issue.

You can do some more homework on Gold Tip's website. They have a feature called "Build Your Own Arrow". Work something up there and it will give you total arrow weight. There are many arrow shafts to choose from. Just be sure you get be properly spined for the bow weight and length of arrow.

Just don't get caught up in crunching numbers too much. Afterall, that's all they are is numbers. If in doubt you can always ask at a local archery shop and they should set you up right.

your arrow weight is completely up to you, however you should probably be shooting a 400 spine arrow as they will flex and recover better than say a 340 or 300 spine. With this in mind you should choose lighter arrows if where you're hunting you are shooting thru small openings. The more open your sight windows the heavier arrow you can use as the heavier the arrow the more drop you will incur. I myself like to shoot heavier arrows as they have greater kinetic energy (penetration) for your longer shots.

As BG stated bow manufacturers recommend you do not go below 5 gr per lb of draw weight. However, although that will give you the fastest speed out of your bow, shooting that light of an arrow is hard on both the bow and the cables/strings. A lighter arrow also makes the bow noisier. Something whitetails do not like. I do not know what your draw length is but if you buy an arrow that weighs somewhere between 8 -9 gr per inch and say cut 30" you will have a shaft weighing between 240 - 270 grs. Add fletching, nock, insert, and 100 gr tip and you're up in the neighborhood of 400 - 420 gr for total weight. I believe I read somewhere that you loose about 1 fps for every 5 gr more of arrow wt. So you're only talking 10 - 14 fps. But you will make up for it in more KE, less noise, and it will be easier on your bow. And you will probably have better arrow flight.
