RE: best rain gear
Cabela' s MTO50 rain gear w/Gore-Tex sounds like what
you' re looking for. I' ve had mine several years and can' t say enough good things about it. Lightweight, packable, quiet, and it' ll keep you dry...[:-];). |
RE: best rain gear
but it' s all so expensive, i can' t see spend that kind of money to wear it once or twice a year, unless it rains alot during deer season where you are.

RE: best rain gear
XI,
Look at it this way. You are obviously a young hunter with many years of hunting ahead of you. Buy a decent set of rain gear. If ya gotta git a part time job to pay for it then so be it. I have one of cabela' s packable suits. Cost was about $185. How long will it last??? The rest of my life. I' ve had the cheap stuff over the years and spent my share of wet days in the woods. The cheap ones make you sweat so you' re often wetter than if you' d worn nothing. When you consider that a good rain suit will last 10 years or more the cost isn' t so great. Actually if you buy a good, quiet, breathable suit you can wear them all the time. And over the years you' ll figure the cost isn' t much per year. |
RE: best rain gear
i agree with BGfisher i got the mt50 from cabelas its a good suit mines goretex with scentblocker pricee but well worth it. being wet just is no fun. a lot of guilds in alaska ware helly hansen packable and really tough it streches when you snag on something hard to put a hole in it and it breathable to but not in camo.spend the money and get a good set you be buying a lot of rainware if you don' t

RE: best rain gear

RE: best rain gear
I' ll have to second the MTO50. I love mine. If there is even a cloud in the sky I just wear it. It is comfortable, quiet and if you get the uninsulated version it can be worn in any weather. The stuff is durable enough you don' t need separate clothing. Mine withstood ten days in pouring rain in Alaska and kept me dry. As for the price, after the Alaska experience it was like stealing.

RE: best rain gear
XI,
OK, so maybe you ain' t so young. How about experienced. I' m 56 and been hunting for over 40 years. Have been through a lot of cheap stuff, even down so low as to cut arm and head holes in garbage bags. Compared with yesteryear the stuff today is the cat' s meow. I just got my suit last year. Only thing I regret was that I waited so long. I started hunting out of state---like Illinois. When I figure it cost about $2000 for a week hunt, a little thing like rain isn' t going to hinder me from the treestand. And mine doesn' t have a roof. Few portables do. So what you waiting for? Buy it now so you' ll enjoy it that much longer. You' re going to end up with it someday anyway. I did. Denial won' t solve anything. Barry[&:] |
RE: best rain gear
hey bg i didn' t want to start an argument with you especially on someone else' s thread, and i' m not disagreeing with you that you should buy the best , i guess what it all boils down to is i haven' t figured a way yet to justify to my wife spending that kind of moneysorry for the misunderstanding!!!![:-][:-][:-]

XI,
No offense taken my man. I know these things are for info and possibly making new friends. We' re cool. Barry |
RE: best rain gear
I got tired of getting soaked in Pa last year. I got lucky and walked into our local Dicks and purchased Mossy Oak QT raintaimer pants and jacket for $100.00. I sat the last day in rain and 32 degrees. Perfectly dry at the end of the day.

RE: best rain gear
If I know it is going to lightly " drizzle" off and on, I wear light layers of insulation beneath my regular camo.
If it is raining hard enough for me to have to wear a rainsuit to keep from getting drenched, I stay home or leave the field. Blood trails dissipate rapidly in rain and on rain-soaked ground. ;) |
RE: best rain gear
Cabelas MT050 is probably the best out there but it is also the most expensive. Cabelas also has their Rain Suede which is much less expensive and still very durable and effective.
I also saw an inexpensive pair of tops/bottoms in their archery catalog a week or so ago. I forget the name but both pieces were about $100 together! |
RE: best rain gear
Does anyone find that some of the materials out there that claim to be 100% water proof are actually that??? I bought some 10X raingear that seemed to be pretty good for about two years, but then got saturated on a heavy rain. I tried some of the spray on coatings out there, but none of them really worked.
It just seems to me that the only way to be pretty much sure of being dry is to use gortex. Comments???? I will be looking to get some packable gear for a trip that I will be taking next year to Colorado. |
RE: best rain gear
Cabela' s MT050 is tuff, but not lightweight. No big deal if you are walking reasonable distances without a lot of gear. I took MT050 on a backpack Dall sheep hunt in the NWT of Canada. Big mistake. Pants/Jacket weigh almost four pounds and get soaked/clammy after a few hours in the rain. Try Frogg Toggs if still hunting as the pant/jacket combo weigh less than a pound, are 100% waterproof, and cost less than $100. I use Marmot or REI raingear for backpack hunts. I have also heard good things about Helly Hanson. You get what you pay for!

RE: best rain gear
I' ve got a browning pac-light gore-tex. I' ve sat in rain all day stayed bone dry i' ts very light weight the jacket actually folds into it' s own pocket it' s not cheap but well worth it. It' s also very quiet and with the gore-tex it stops the wind so I wear it alot of days as a light jacket when it' s not raining

RE: best rain gear
I have had Cabelas dry plus stuff for 4 years and love it. It is not the MTO50 but one step down. For fishing thought I use a Helly Hanson Jacket and bibs and it SMOKES the Cabelas stuff. Better water protection, lighter weight, better ventilation, etc. I don' t know that they make it in camo though? It would also be much louder though. My bud used his Dry Plus stuff hunting in AK 2 years ago and his report was that it was awsome. You still have to layer and need good gloves, boots, etc.
just a tip - I use suspenders on my rain gear when hunting, It holds the pants up higher in the inseam for walking and doesn' t let the water down your " crack" when you sit. You don' t need a tight belt on then either. |
RE: best rain gear
I was looking at the cabelas rain suede. Could I use this for fishing to and be in a downpoor without it leaking. Also, how much does the browning raingear cost.
