Morrell Yellow Jacket or the Rhinehardt 18-1

I like the 18in1 but it's pricey

RE: Broadhead targets.

I bought a styrofoam target last weekthat is about 3 inches thick that works fine but I have to unscrew the broadheads if I don't want to pull the fletchings through the target each time. I plan on making a special head with a short screw to speed things up.

They come in 0 to 65 and 0 to 75 pound draw weight versions.

Interestingly enough field points penetrate about the same or a little better than do broadheads. The field points I've shot have sometimes penetrated up to the fletchings.

The point or broadhead makes a hole in the target and then passes through, the arrow is slowed down by friction on the shaft.

I think that mine was "manufactured" by R&M targets and cost $20.

My block sucks! My snuffers eat it up pretty bad.

I've been using a Rinehart 18-1 and love it. It's a little pricey, but at $100 its still not too bad. And it comes with a 1 year warranty. So if you shoot it completely out in a year, they'll send you a new one free of charge. Can't beat that.

RE: Broadhead targets.

I use the Morrell Yellowjacket and like it. It held up well this year, and hopefully it will hold up for another year. I tried the Redhead Block knockoff (made by the same people) and it tore up in no time.

RE: Broadhead targets.

The Cube is a horrible field point target but it's good for broadheadsand unlike the Block, there is a sheathing covering the shooting surfaces that helps hold in the bondedlayered material and not make a mess. Plus, they are prettyinexpensive.

Grandviewer 12-17-2007 12:09 PM

RE: Broadhead targets.

I have shot the Cabelas MDL broadhead target since last spring and it's still holding up but for a year's use I don't think it will. The Yellow Jacket didn't hold up a year for me. I've got the Rinehart 18-1 target but I have not shot at it yet. I hope it's better than the other two.

The 4x4 block does not hold up to broadheads at all but field points it does okay for a year or more.

RE: Broadhead targets.

The concept of the Block target, according to the local dealer, is that you shoot broadheads only very sparingly - just enough to confirm where they fly compared to field points - and primarily use the target for just field points. I have about 4,000 shots through mine - in only about a year. Only a couple of hundred of those were broadheads. It has several fist size spots where arrows will go in past the fletching. I can probably get another couple thousand shots out of it before it is totally trash. Right now, though, I'm not really comfortable shooting at it unless it's placed in front a stack of hay bales

I'm probably going to try one of these once my Block 4X4 is worn out. I got one of theSuper DuperMorrell outdoorbag targets this summer and it is holding up really well (field points only).

RE: Broadhead targets.

I always thought it was funny that everyone expects their broadheads to "tear up" a deer and do massive damage, but then they gripe that it tears up their targets. If they are worth anything as a game stopper, they are not going to be kind to a target no matter what material is used. JMHO.

Roskoe 12-18-2007 02:19 PM

RE: Broadhead targets.

True . . . . although most of the broadheads that went into my Block target were the practice heads - like the Muzzy, Rage, and Montec. Still, they tear the target up significantly. Best case scenario is when the broadhead is sticking a couple inchesout the back side - where you can just unscrew it and then pull the arrow back out.

RE: Broadhead targets.

18-1 is just awesome. It will outlast any target out there, therfore worth the extra ca$h. IMO.

RE: Broadhead targets.

I make my own out of styrofoam coolers. I get them from hog farmers, they get vaccines and a.i's in them. Anyway they are thick foam and I put big chunks of foam in them and tape it shut. After I shoot it I unscrew the broadhead then pull the arrow out. Kind of a pain but doesn't cost anything in most cases. You can also shoot all sides,so you can get some decent life out of it. Just another idea if anyone wants to try and some of these farmers get alot of these coolers so there can be lots of free targets.

I got a Morrell's Yellow jacket on Thursday. We'll see how it holds up!

There isn't a target made that can withstand the consistant pounding of broadheads. It is what it is so I'd go as cheap as possible as you will be repairing or replacing them constantly. The one Justin recommends is a good deal, I think I'd purposely see if I could shoot through one with broadheads in a year. I'd bet I'd do it.

RE: Broadhead targets.

im with Rob. i buy a cheap foam target from Dick's sporting goods..its roughly 2" thick of pretty solid foam and is 30" square or something like that...i just push golf tees into it and shoot those as my spots. i get alot of use out of them...dont count shots...but i shot alot of broadheads...think they run 30$ or so...cant find anything similar at the hardware stores though...

i think i may buy a rinehart 18-1 sooner or later...im like Rob...i will fling broadheads all year just to see if i cant ruin one...my only fear is how hard removal is...my foam sheets are simple enough...unscrew the head pull the shaft and screw it back on...works for me

I shot at my Morrell's yellow Jacket and broadhead removal is very easy.

I've shot Morrells, and the Block, but neither will stand up to Broadheads like a Cube;)

I'm telling you, spend the 100 and get the reinhardt. I would be willing to lay money that you would go thru at least 10 $30 targets before the 18-1 gave out. My shop guy sold one to a guy who shoots nothing but broadheads and it took him like 2 years and somewhere around 4k shots to cut it in half. I've had mine for 6 months, mostly broadheads and not even a dent. Worth the extra cash IMO.

Another vote for the Cube. I've shot thousands of BHs through mine. You can shoot it from all six sides, and it won't sliver like the Block.

RE: Broadhead targets.

I shoot broadheads year round. There is nothing that can be slashed up and take it for long. Anyone who say's different is selling something. You and I know it's true.

How many spots do you fell comfortable shooting at on a target? We practise with shots we expect to make. Requires a sizable target so we hit something and not have to find them buried in the ground somewhere.

Drink the koolaid if you want, I'm not spending a dime more on a target that's going to be shreaded than I have to. I pick solid foam over layered any day. I'll be layering it soon enough.

Go to Cabela's wesite. They have there consumers do a review on products and rate them 1-5, with 5 being the best.

Here is how they scored:

The Cube--3.2
Morrell 6 shooter--2.6
Morrell Yellow Jacket--3.3
Original BLOCK--4.3
BLOCK 4x4--4.5

Again, this is independant reviews, without bias, done by Cabela's customers that have purchased the product and what they think of it.

I would say with going with something from BLOCK makes the most sense.

Highly differs from my hands-on experience. You will find many of those reviews are written before the product hardly has any use on it. I would rather believe one guys opinion who has used all 5 targets rather than one guys opinion about the target he just bought;)

I thought using UNBIASED opinions from many people who have used these targets would be good and fair information to giveto a person looking to buy a target.

Did I just read what I thought I did? UNBIASED? HA!! You've got to be kidding me?!?

News flash!! There's a lot of people on this site who know you're Chad Stoll, Vice President of Marketing for Field Logic!!! If they didn't, they do now!

C'mon, lie again that you're not like you do on all your other posts. When I mentioned the name listed in your profile earlier you went back and erased your last name, what are you going to do this time go delete your first name too?? Every one can go back and read every single one of your posts... about as unbiased as Hillary Clinton would be in a debate with a republican!

Annika3 is one of the founding partners of Field Logic and at least at one time was and probably still is the vp of marketing and one of the most untrustworty manufacturer representatives whos ever visited bowhunting forums!!

There. It's out now. Go back and try to tell the truth now but you can't your in so deep.

Like I said I'll take a guys opinion on targets or anything else who has used several, not some guys opinion on a target he bought a week prior to writing a review, or on the one and only he has. I have sold them all locally, and I can tell you which ones have performed best for my customers.

We all know you wouldn't be biased annika3[8D]

I didn't recommend them;)They chose the best ones over time through trial and error with lots of arrows shot and several $$ spent.

I do recommend certain ones now[8D]

Well now I've read four pages of opinions on these and I am still wondering which one to buy.

I have a bag target for field points and a 3-D target for shooting field points from a treestand. Looking at the Bass Pro website they have the American Whitetail 20"x20" broadhead target that has some good reviews, has anybody here used one?

That's the Cube and it's the one my customers have come to prefer. The foam is heatbonded and even though broadhead targets take a lot of abuse. I would put this target up against any others.;)

Check'em out. http://www.archerytargets.com/Cube.aspx
