Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
OK I've used and loved the G5 Montec.... but the local archery store cant keep them on the shelves so I grabbed some hellrazors (its kinda gettin to close to season here to be without some nice sharp broadheads :) ) I just wanna know if any of you have used the hellrazors before??
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
My wife is using them this year. I had her set up with montecs but since she doesnt pull that much weight and has fairly low KE I switched her over to the hellrazors because the come alot sharper out of the package. They actualy hit the exact same spot the montecs did. I think both heads are pretty much equal but like I said before the hellrazors come shaving sharp and the montecs are a bit tricky to get that sharp.

RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
Yea I was worried about the whole KE since I have a 70# Trykon... they feel a little flimsey compared to the Montecs but I'm fairly excited to see how they fly and penetrate
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
All I can tell you is at 220fps they fly good and kill foam really well. Come the first weekend in Oct. hopefuly Ill be able to tell you about on game performance.

RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
no comments onhellrazor , but the NAP razorcaps are fairly similiar but way deadlier. they dominate the montecs
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
No difference. There's like 4-5 heads that are exactly the same. I wonder if they were mixed up if people could tell which was which. Love the name.:D

RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
I use 85 gr G5's.. Fly great! Cut nice too!

RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
I've shot the montecs in the past with good results, if you put it through the lungs you'd recover the animal. However there was typicallyvery little blood to follow, to me they just weren't sharp enough. Because of that I switched to razorcaps....great heads no complaints. I'm currently shooting Spitfires but have shot the hellrazors they fly just like my field pts and like mentioned before they are shaving shap right out of the package! Yes they are SIMILAR but not the same....I was told by someone in the know at NAP about how they are made and I'll spare you the details but they use a different type of metal that allows for a better edgeso if I had a choice between the two I think you'd be better off with the hellrazors due the the excellent edge they have on them.
Just my 2 cents |
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
YOu know, I am little dissappointed in the G5's. I shot a doe last night. She was about 25 yards, and I was real high in the tree. She was walking away from me and slightly quartering to me. I figured the arrow would hit near the top of the rib cage but figured it would puch down hit both lungs and come out on the right leg. I figured the G5 would cut thru her like a laser. But what happened was it hit where I figured, slide on top of the rib cage and thru the spine or up the spine(and tenderloin:(). And didn't penetrate all the way.
Deer expired within 10 seconds, but kinda surprised. I realize the top of the back is pretty solid, but thought the G5 could punch thru easily |

RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
Oh yea, I sharpened them until they were shaving me. Maybe it just hit just right to skid instead of dig. I will continue to evaluate them all season.
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
There isnt a broadhead out there that wont skid or get deflected with the right conditions. The montecs do need a little work to get them shaving sharp out of the box. I have the G5 diamond stone and if you wet it down and do a few light strokes on each side they are shaving sharp. Bigcountry puts a little more time and effort into it but really doesnt take much.

RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
everyone always complains about the bad bloodtrails with montecs
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
Id be willing to bet that everyone that is complaining about bloodtrails arent touching up those blades and getting them shaving sharp. It makes a big differance when it comes to blood trails. There has been posts before on how sharpness matters and for the best blood trails your heads need to be sharp.

RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
I have used the montecs for two years now and they are setup to go out with me this weekend when season opens. I have taken one doe each year for the past two years with them and had complete pass throughs with both. No need for a blood trail on either because I watched both deer go less than 70 yards and then fall over. I never touched them up after taking them out of the package either. I will defenitely do it this year from reading big and passthru's posts.
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
passthru, you are correct at first I didn't touch them up but I did get pass throughs on whatever I shot. I did later start to hone them on a diamond and conventional stone, I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best at putting an edge on things but was never able to get them as sharp as my NAP heads right out of the package. I really don't have the time to spend sharpening my NEW broadheads, I'll stick w/ my spitfires and hellrazors:D
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
ACPOSSETIM, I agree. I dont really have or am I willing to devote any time to sharpening brand new heads. Thats one reason my wife is shooting hellrazors. Montecs are great heads when they are sharp. I just dont think you should have to sharpen a new head, they should come that way.
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
No broad head will remedy a misplaced shot any sharp broad head will work if properly placed and in good tune Ive used cut on impact type blades with best results using tested broad heads Ive had one that planed strange right out of the box and also ones that Ive shot deer with appeared OK but would plane when shot This was my thought on the welded hell razor would it be as strong as the forged montec and maintain good flight after going through an animal.
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
Have been using the G5 Montecs the past 3 years. I have had not reason to try the Hellrazors this year. The Montecs have yet to dissapoint me. They do not "feel" as sharp, but they put a lickin' on deer. I usually do not touch them up right out of the package and have had no problems with blood trails to date.
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
I've already harvested a buck with the hellrazors and I love em'. My bow is shooting 300 fps and the broadheads fly great. I highly recommend them.
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
Sorry for the ignorance, but why buy a broadhead that you have to sharpen?
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
Question back at you, PA....do you throw away an $8- $10broadhead after shooting it into foam, a deer, or the dirt? If not, then it will need to be sharpened. They don't stay sharp if you use them.

RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
Do the Montecs and Hellrazors fly the same? I bought a pack of the G5 pre-season heads to see how they fly. If they shoot well I was considering buying the Hellrazors because of the sharpness.
|
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
They shoot the same for me out ofmy Hoyt Protec, Reflex Growler, and my son's Bear Element.

RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
Gents,
I recently shared an email with Brian Anderson from G5. I told him about an extra step I perform on my 85 and 100 gr Montecs. After using the 1200 grit G5 stone, I use a piece of 1500A grit autobody detailing sandpapper and lay it flat on a table or bench. Take the broadhead and perform the side to side strokes like on the G5 stone on the 1500 paper. Rotate the head until all three blades are done. 15-20 strokes per blade is good. Now, feel the edge!!! Much sharper than the 1200. Brian liked the idea very much and told me that G5 would try to post that method on their website. Try it, it works... good luck to all you Montec shooters. |
RE: Hellrazor vs. G5 Montec????
I have shot 2 deer this year with the same Montec broadhead. Both deer went under 50 yards. G5 makes a flat diomond stone that can hone the montec sharper than you can buy them. I amsoldwith Montecs!
