Climbing Treestand

Hello, I am looking to upgrade to a new climber finally and as always,I wish to consult the folks in the forum for guidance with this purchase. What do folks use and why do you like it etc? As always, any input is greatly appreciated. Merry Christmas!

I have the API Bowhunters Grand Slam and love it. Its weighs 20lbs, is comfrotable, climbs very fast, and has an open front. Everything you need for bowhunting.

Summits huh? I was looking at a Loggy Transformer as well, looks nice and doesnt weigh a ton. The Lone Wolf looks nice but it seems to be kinda expensive. That Grand slam looks like a viable option at 20 lbs

the new loggys should be real good too. I really like the summit... i'm sure almost all new treestands are pretty much all good... another thing to think about is.. your pretty much gonna get what you pay for.

i got a summit openshot 2 weeks ago and i love it.....it takes a little getting use to, but it's light and very quiet.

I believe it's really a personal preference choice most are good. I tend to use the Lone Wolf.

If youre spending 1000.00 on a bow,Dont shortchange yourself on climbing equipment.I dont have a lone wolf yet,But ive seen one in action and cant wait till sept 07!!!

RE: Climbing Treestand

Yeah, I'm sure the "you get what you pay for" is a solid part of the equation but I have to say the Lone Wolf looks very nice, I just havent seen one up close as of yet. My Summit is a decent stand however it is rather "robust" at 27 lbs.

I love the Lone Wolf, but as you said they are not cheap. Summit, Loggy Bayou and a couple of others make quality stands.

Yep, those are the best ones out there. Myself I just strap four squirrels on and scamper up to a branch.:D

Which squirrels do u prefer, red, grey, hybrid, or the elusive black? lol They all bite!

I have used my Summit climber for 2 years. I have tried several types including a ladder stand and various hang-on types. The Summit is the MOST comfortable stand out there IMHO. It is quiet, comfortable, but most importantly, safe. Take it from someone who HATES heights, this is the one to get.;)

RE: Climbing Treestand

I would also go with the Summit. Two reasons: #1-comfortable!! The seats on the climbers are awesome. Very big, padded, and back reset is very long so it covers you all the way to the neck. #2- They are all-welded, so no rattling. The loggys that my friend uses rattle like you wouldn't believe because of the bolts. They do fold flatter because you can move the brackets, butthat flatness doesn't really make it any easier to carry than my Summit.

had them all,50 years at it..the ladder stand is my best now,BUT i am getting older and like how easy it is to get into..

i have summit climbinmg, nothing wrong with it BUT ,its not best, in my opinion..

what is??LOCK ON STAND,WITH CLIMBING STICKS..secret to hunting lower is being hidden..gun season, its not as important as archery in fall..

CLIMBING stand you have to cut limbs off, which is against law here in pa. or find tree with, no limbs..thats hard to do and get in best tree..

then when you cut off limbs, you are not hidden..i use a LOCK-ON stand, any kind will do, get BIGGEST platform you can..then ,16 ft of LADDER STEPS..dont use the tie on ones, they are awful..these come in 4 ft sections.. find the THICKEST tree with limbs..with climbing stand you must pick a tree of certain size so your stand can work going up tree..

i seen trees full of ice, and hunters come crashing down with a CLIMBING STAND..

with lock on you can pick out a fat tree, with limbs etc..no swaying in wind..secret is not getting HIGH in tree, its getting HIDDEN in a tree and getting up there ,quiet and safe..

save your self the money, get a cheap BIG lock-on stand and 40 dollar,16ft LADDER STEPS..

And spoken it well! No doubt that is a killer set up and the best! :D

A climber does have it's advantages and I would not like to hunt without having one available. I wouldn't want to pack a stand and sticksinto some places I've been. Hard enough getting myself there.:D

I'm personally against setting any age limits so here's to hopping you hunt any way you want to untilyou breath your last.:D

I have the Summit 180 and like it. It doesn't have the open front but it doesn't affect my bowhunting. I perfer to sit facing away from the tree when bowhunting and facing the tree when gun hunting.

Summit. U can add on features to it such as a blind & zippered pockets. the weight on it is 21# not 27. very quite & has a trigger to feed out the cable. Go out & try ea one if u know any one that has them.

RE: Climbing Treestand

as we are talking climbing stands, personelly, i dont like them from a safety, noise or movement, postion of tree..

here in pa. you CANT cut a limb off tree, its against law..they arrested hunters this year for that and also for drilling into tree with those hanging hooks to hang your gear on..

hunters are turning in hunters now DO to lack of deer and hunters moving into their territory..

so, you are limited to a straight tree with no limbs..thats not bad in gun season but in archery, not good..

next, we get some years with icy weather..i saw hunters that slid down tree because of ice on bark..oaks are real slippery with rain /ice on them..

with lock on stand and laddder steps, man, you got it covered..i can go up tree in 15 minutes with my ladder steps and lock-on stand..usually takes me 30 minutes because i am fussy on my postion in tree..

i can go right around the limbs and use limbs as cover.. no need to get up 20 ft..12/15 is fine..ladder steps are not heavy, to me anyhow..so, if you like to move, no problem..

after i come down ,if i am not going to be out next day or couple of days, i take the bottom ladder section off,so its not stolen..so far, no problems..

50 years i have been at this from sitting on limb to plywood in trees etc..i have summit climbing stand that i just gave to my cousin for christmas, i did not use it..

my best stands are LADDER standor lock on with LADDER STEPS..dont not use those strap on steps, they are nasty and you will get hurt..if you use them, put rachet straps on them, not ones that come with it..

as you get older, like me, you want comfort/safety and ease of use..climbing stand is not what i want under me..when you are young, hell, i could fall from tree and laugh about it, i did MANY of times..

1 time i thought i could ride a buck thru fields..so, i go in tree, buck, 8 point walked under, i hung from limb and let go.. i landed on buck and grabed his horn and rode him for about 1 step..

man, i did some nutty things when i was 12 years old ..dad had me in woods all time and i have some real funny stories if anyone is interested..

I have the 05 L.B. mega transformer, its nice folds flat for backpacking and its quiet. My wife got me the equalizer for Christmas and I haven't used the transformer since. The Equalizer is awesome. I think I will be selling my transformer! She bought the stand and gave it to me early, about a month before Christmas.

I have a pair of Summit Vipers. The only thing I might would change would be to get a third one!!!
I can sit in these things all day long. Very quiet, very comfortable and I feel secure enuff to nap in them, not advising that you do that of course.
One thing I would recommend, the safety harness that comes with the stand is very solid and serviceable. But, I would highly recommend getting one of the integral safety vests/straps. They are much easier to put on, don't get tangled and I think would work much better in a fall.
Good luck.
Hank

I like lone wolf, they are light and mine has no bar in the front of it. I hate the bar in fromt of me. But right now i am using a lock on. I am starting to like them more.

Tree stand preference is like, you know whats; everyone has their own opirion and preferences. I just bought my first climber, a summit bullet backpacker, as I want it for bowhunting in National Wildlife refuge and state forrest land, and it just does not make sense to lug in a hang on. I will still use my hang on, and also regularly use wood box stands as well. I think that you want options for what to hunt out of, depending on where and how you plan to hunt.

killzonearchery 01-08-2007 08:25 AM

RE: Climbing Treestand

yea that is very true becuase if i am going to land i do not own the i use a climber and any other time then a lock on. So you have a really good point.

with lock on you can pick anytree, with climber, you need one straight and no limbs as you cant cut limbs off on publicland..

also, with low limbs on tree, you are hidden more and dont have to go as high to hide..

i bought those newladder steps and they are not heavy, to me carry into woods and they go up real easy and then you can lock on your stand..

I cut limbs off of trees on public land, not big limbs or a lot of them, but who will know if someone cuts a few off of a tree that is in the middle of a forrest that is thousands of acres big or along a river that is miles long?

first, its breaking law in pa.i dont make law..hunters today that hunt area and you come into it are ones that are turning others in..

many were turned in for using the screw in little thing that holds your bow..i could not believe the number of hunters this year carrying CAMERAS ..

if no one sees you, your fine but if they walk by and see you cut limbs off or have a gun holder screwed into tree, some are reporting it..

when the cell phone service gets in here in clinton county this year, i believe the dcnr and pgc will be very busy with calls..did you know the wco are also handling these cases of tree damage?

i got an off brand one from bass pro about five years ago now and only gave 60 bucks for it. i still use it, comfortable, and easy to climb. i wouldnt waste 250 dollars on a overated treestand just because of brand names, instead id buy better arrows or upgrade bow or accesories. maybe save up to go hunt something youve never hunted before.

just my opinion i kno alot of you guys gotta have that summit or lone wolf name tag under your feet to feel better which is great. i bought a hoyt vectrix when i was shooting a browning that served me well, simply because i wanted a top of the line "HOYT" . i dont regret it at all but my old bow works fine.

I have an old API "bowhunter". I like climber stands that use the "stirup" typeplatform & the handle type climbers. Whatever you buy you have to be able to set it up in the cold dark woods & climb easily & quietly-That takes practice.
