Vertical Pins
I've been back and forth on what type of sight to get. originally i was thinking about a pendulum, but it seems that many people on this forum think with todays high speed bows, they arent worth it. (I'm onlyshooting 220fps)
So now i'm looking into single pin sights. Is their any advantage to vertical pins. It seems to me that they wouldn't be quite as accurate. But what do i know, maybe i should just get horizontal pins. |
RE: Vertical Pins
Personally, I like the vertical pin because I can align it with the back-side of the leg (on a deer), and it mentally helps me. I personally like a single vertical pin w/ an adjustment mechanism for different distances. This has greatly helped my accuracy, and it just works for me.
Check out Vital Bow Gear sights. I've been using them for several years now and they are very nice. Crazy bright, tough, simple, and they have a bunch of different sights to choose from. Check em out! |
RE: Vertical Pins
I shoot a Trophy Ridge Flatliner 3 pin (vertical pins) and i feel vertical pins do have a much clearer sight window than horizontal arrangements but i would have to say go to nearest proshop and ask to try bows with both vertical and horizontal pins and see what you like best. here is what to expect.

RE: Vertical Pins
I have a Trophy Ridge Rhino and love it. I like the vertical pins and wouldnt go back to the horizontal. However I like 2 pins that dont move that way I can make a quick adjustment in my mind for yardage and dont have to mess with it.

RE: Vertical Pins
How do you gap/split your pins? It's impossible unless you have your pins off to the side which is not good especially when picking a hair or another nock on a 3D range. Seems odd to have vertical alignment? The vertical pins aren't for everyone, but gapping the pins has not been a problem for me, and many others. Seeing between or through the pins is easier for some than others, just like some can see arrow flight, and some can't!! Odd as it may seem , I like the vertical pins better than my old horizontal, and it took a very short time of practice to get accustumed to the difference! |
RE: Vertical Pins
I like the verticle pins also. Ive had both kinds vertical and horizontal. The simple reason is the horizontal blocks out more of the target. I have a trophy ridge its ok, wish I could afford a new one. Ive been using verticle for 3 years now

RE: Vertical Pins
I switched this year to vertical pins. I love it--I haven't had a chance to hunt with it yet, but at the range, I see no problems. I like how I can align all the pins up with the deer's front leg (as someone else previously said). Now I just need to work on figuring out distance on the fly...

RE: Vertical Pins
I have a one verticle pin sight with adjustment for yardage to shoot 3d "i did use it last year hunting worked fine" and it shoots great and is very acurate. I will probaly put on a trophy ridge for hunting this year vertical alignment is the way to go.

RE: Vertical Pins
the vertical pins and gapping was never really an issue for me, however, the pins not being very bright and them being completely black when in the shade was.
|
RE: Vertical Pins
That was my problem also and is the reason I no longer have a TR Matrix on my bow. When my target was in bright light and I was in shade,(heavy cover or a blind), it appeared as if I only had one pin. Made it so I could not make out the 30 & 40 yard pins. Those of you that use this type of sight may want to check that out. Missing a chance in the woods would be a heck of a way to learn.

RE: Vertical Pins
I shoot a flatliner,vertical pins, I put a gold colored circle and a light
on it, the light is purple in color and makes the pins look like bulbs. I could and have shot this rest in the pitch black basement with accuracy. |
RE: Vertical Pins
i quess it must be opinion, but i had a trophy ridge and i threw the thing in the garbage... you can't see your pins during sundown.. and the pins bend like a hair in the wind... do yourself a favor... don't even consider this site as an option!!!!!

RE: Vertical Pins
Go with the horizontal pins you can see the outline of the deer much better because there is spaces in-beteween the pins. With verticle pins the spaces are filled with the next pin coming up. Much easier to pick out the outline in low light as well with horizontal. Go with the Cobra Sidwinder. I love mine, and are very afordable and you'll never need a light these things, they shine all the time!

RE: Vertical Pins
tschammel,
I had problems in low light with the verticle pins too. I also switched to the Cobra Sidewinder. They are unreal bright. One question though. My fibre opticwraps seem to vibrate a bit on the shot. Does yours? how'd you fix it if so? |
RE: Vertical Pins
i use the cobra and had the same problem.. i just readjusted the fibers inside the clear housing and the problem was fixed; you could also stick some clear plastic wrap like freezer wrap in there if you can't get it to stop.
|
RE: Vertical Pins
Thanks Walt. The freezer wrap idea sounds good. I'll give it a try
|
RE: Vertical Pins
I had the same thing happen. I fixed my buzz by sticking on a rubber harmonic dampaner on the top of the site where it is flat. I then opened the clear plastic casing and put a few drops of super glueon the fibers which held them in place. Sounds like the freezer wrap might take away from your light a littel and make it even buzz even more. A few drops of glue on the fibers and the puting the dampener on and mine disapeared.

anytime DannyD...

RE: Vertical Pins
TSC,
I thought of the glue thing also. But since I have broken my pins twice and have had to slightly unravel them to fix it, i didn't think gluing them would be a good idea. The dampener though sounds like a good idea |
RE: Vertical Pins
I went from a horizontal 3 pin to the Cobra 1 pin vertical sight. I love it. Less pins to concentrate on and like someone else said I put it right next to the front leg and I know i am hitting the vitals
|
RE: Vertical Pins
OK I'm a MORON. Here I am not even doing it right with the V-Pin. OK I shoot a verticle 5 pin but never even thought about utilizing the darn front leg as a guide. Now I hit where I aim but have noticed that my groupings are not what they should be. Consistant! Standards I set for myself are 2" at the most. I always learn something even though this should have been obvious. DUH! Thanks guys.

RE: Vertical Pins
