Best blade steel for Huntng knife

I'm wanting to surprise my boy with a new hunting knife with a handle made out of the deer antler he got this year. Any suggestions on what the best steel would be. I was looking at maybe D2 blade with a full tang.

Also any suggestion on where to buy the blade?

Thanks

I like the 1095 green river blanks.

You will have to use your imagination because mine was not made for a gift so its nothing fancy and has been used heavily.

If you can find an old crosscut saw, it makes excellent knives. Cut your blank with a cold chisel and shape on a grinder. Do not heat the blade at all.

I have a problem and i can not show it to others unfortunately.

Edge of the image in the middle is for you.
But will want to prove it as a finished knife.

spartan1 02-03-2016 06:33 AM

And the lower blade of the first picture will be for quigleysharps4570,
i hope you like it.

spartan1 02-03-2016 08:35 AM

And to tell the two blades.
First is quigleysharps4570 and steel 440B, total length 23cm., only the blade is 12 cm. and is 3,8 mm. thick.
The handle will use stabilized room of walnut and mosaic pins.

spartan1 02-03-2016 08:42 AM

Blade kellyguinn is H12MF steel and hardened to 60-61 units.
The blade is 13,5 cm. long, and 4 mm. thick.

This is for future blade knife Kelly.
Blade of steel H12MF. Ruh and a photograph with two plates antler handle.

d80hunter 04-08-2016 07:02 AM

The only two kinds of knife steels I use for hunting are D2 and whatever 440 steel Buck uses. I like to carry both with me.

spartan1 04-08-2016 08:50 AM

I will respond to the post of d80hunter with two question:
1. If ever he enjoyed a knife with a blade of steel and steel RWL-34, ELMAX ?
2. And what he said was the difference in the steel H12MF, D2 and 1.2379 ?

kellyguinn 04-11-2016 04:36 AM

Here is a vid of the H12MF steel for Spartan.
