Default Gut hook sharpening?

I've got a Buck with a gut hook and have always had trouble getting a "shave your face" edge on it. Any secrets to accessing and sharpening this edge?
I actually don't like it . . . wished I had got the model without it. But I'll use it so help is appreciated.

A chainsaw file of the right size does a good job.

Yup, chainsaw file.
I was going to suggest that but Falcon got here first.

Default Figured I'd do it differently

Use a round metal file, that I got from a hardware store. A lot of things for "hunting" I found in a hardware or building supply store. Relative got into chain saws. I'll keep it in mind.

I found some Arkansas whetstones that are 1/4" diameter. I bought about 6 of them that are 4" long. They will sharpen a guthook unless it is vee shaped. If I find some more, I'll post them here and on the FS forum.

I just answered this question on another thread lol. I have used this little diamond steel for many years. I have one in my field dress kit, tackle box, truck, and one in the kitchen. It has a groove for sharpening fish hooks, and one side is flat, so it will fit easily into most any gut hook. The steel itself retracts into the handle and tightens like an exacto blade. Worth every penny of the $10 cost.

I've used a small diameter wooden dowel rod wrapped with fine grit emery cloth to polish the edge on my gut hook knives. You could also wrap the cloth on a small chainsaw file.

Now when sharpening how do you run the file on the gut hook? Against the blade?

Use a "rat's tail" file and then a knive "steel".
