How do I measure 100 grains of black powder? Do I just sit there and count:1,2,3,4,5,etc...

Centerfire-Listen to these guys.Collectively there are at least 100 years experience shooting ML's.Read the book,ask questions of anyone here,they will not steer you wrong.If you know anyone that shoots,get them to show you proper loading procedures.Follow all the safety rules common to all shooting sports.Warning---This is very addictive.You may find your centerfires don't have the appeal they once had.

Center Fire, I posted a good manual for you. You need to read one.
These guys can help you, but you have to help yourself too.

This is not a quessing situation, In reality it will explode if you quess.
Do you know what all the components are called and thier use?
Start from the basics! You are trying to start from the top.
Know the powders and projectles first.
Do you know the BLACK POWDER symbols and thier use?

You need to go a little slower.

See Through Powder Measure

Purchase a see through powder measure. Set the bottom nut to where the measure reads 100. Fill it with FFG powder and turn the funnel spout over the measure to cut the load. This will give you a good accurate load every time.

Center Fire that above link if you click on it will open an on line manual for a CVA Sidelock which is what you own. In that manual it will answer all your questions and also give you some good information on how to get started shooting your rifle...

That is a great rifle you have there. They are real good shooters and I am sure you and you're father are going to have a lot of fun. If I were you and had a printer, I would print myself out a copy of the manual and then read it over two even three times until you are very familiar with all the aspect of your rifle...

This will help you get the most out of your rifle and also operate it in a safe effective manner. After you get started shooting then you can start trying different loads and projectiles. In the manual is some good information on that respect also.
