Hornady 300gr XTP HP for elk
I shoot a TC Omega with 2 50 gr 777 pellets and a black Hornady sabot with 300 gr XTP HP bullets. With this combo I have killed several whitetails, 1 shot pass thrus out to 125 yds. How will this bullet hold up on an elk? I have a MZ elk hunt booked for the fall of '05
Some people say that pushing that pistol bullet fast ( 3 pellets of 777 @ 50 gr each) will break it up on impact....is that so? |
RE: Hornady 300gr XTP HP for elk
If the bullet box says XTP-Mag -- then I would trust it for elk. If not... then switch because Hornady makes a 300 gr XTP-Mag bullet.
Also... try switching to Harvester plastic sabots (50-pks). You'll see the continued accuracy & also easier loading. |
RE: Hornady 300gr XTP HP for elk
where do you get those Harvester sabots? I have a devil of a time getting my 3 and 4th shots seated that last 1 1/2" using that combo I've been loading for awhile now.
I just thought the hard seating was part of the game an pulled my breech plug every 4th shot and brushed it good. thanks WB |

Having difficulty the last inch or so with which power?
I would think the 300gr XTP should work good for elk, although I have not had the opportunity to go elk hunting. You may likely need to increase your powder charge to also increase the ballistic capability. There are several on line here that hunt elk and should be able to offer some loading suggestions. |

If you want another good bullet that Triple Se7en was kind enough to turn me on to is the 375 grain Buffalo Bullet SSB sabot sold through Cabela's. I suggested that to another person who took a nice cow elk this year. He did not get pass through but if memory serves me, the elk only ran about 50 yards. It took her heart out and lungs out....They sure shoot excellent in my Black Diamond XR.

wingbar ,
A sabot that might work even better for you are the Nosler sabots. I use them and have used them for about 3 years now. They are slightly thinner than the Harvester. In fact they are about the only thing I can get down tight Thompson barrels. Not that expensive either... I shoot 100/110 grains of loose t7-2f and they work great. If you are shooting hotter loads than that you might need sub-bases... http://www.wholesalehunter.com/produ...slerSabots.htm I am quite confident that a 300 grain projectile will do just fine on an elk. I myself am using a 300 grain .458 (45/70) Nosler Partition with an Orange MMP sabot. I wish I could tell you I have first hand knowledge on this bullet, but no luck yet. Shot a few deer with the 260 grain Nosler and they really put a deer down. With a 100 grains of t7 and a 300 grain bullet - you are getting around 1750fps at the muzzle - 50 yards 1600 fps & 1704 lbs of energy - @ 100 yds 1463 fps & 1426 fpe - 150 yds 1340 fps & 1195 fpe. If you are sighted in at 2.5" high at a 100 the drop at 150 yards is about an inch. Good luck in your search.. |

100 grains of Goex FFg & 375 Buffalo SSB is very accurate....

RE: Hornady 300gr XTP HP for elk
I just shot a 475lb. cow elk with a 300gr. Hornady SST with a 90gr. charge of Black Mag3 which puts that bullet out the muzzle at about 1800fps. The elk was about 90 yards and slightly angled. Shot took out part of the liver and one lung went completely through. I have made a similar shot with a 295gr. Powerbelt aerotip with the same results complete pass through. The plastic tip bullets seem to have good penetration but I am not so sure the expansion is all that great. Possibly on a large bull the results would be a little different. I am considering going with an open hollow point next year if I get lucky enough to be drawn for the hunt.
