CONGRATULATIONS the first deer with a black powder rifle is always kind of special. What were the details. How far was she? What did you use? How far did she run? You start us with a great story and leave out the details.....

i got to the woods around 945 that morning, didnt think that they would be out cause of the full moon. at 1020 it sounded like a freight train coming from behind me, there were 5 of them running and she was the leader. she stopped , i guess she got a whiff of me or something, she was about 40 yards from me when she stopped. when i shot i guess i had my eyes to close to the scope cause i broke my glasses and blooded my forehead pretty good lol. she ran about 20 yards and fell. i was shooting my new traditions 209 50 caliber. going back tommorow for another one

jbcrzy9 It sounds like you were as excited as the deer... those scopes giving the kiss of death can sure draw blood. Sounds like you had some real excitment there for a few minutes. Black Powder hunting is a whole different thing. It sure makes you understand the importance of the first shot counting.....

Again, congratulations... tape them glasses up and go get another.

Bet breaking those glasses didn't bother you a bit though. Might watch things tomorrow.
Hope to hear a good hunting report.

JB,

Well done! You have company, I got my first ML deer this year too.
Mine was also a doe taken at about 80-90 yards-spine shot and had to finish with a neck shot.
I hunt in Illinois where only shotgun or ML are legal.
What was so good was that had I had a shotgun, I would not have been able to pull this shot off!
She was quartered away and I had to shoot between two cottonwood trees.
I was very amazed and pleased.
My load was a 240gr T/C cheapsot with 100 gr clearshot powder.
Congrats!

zakjak221 congratulations... you made a tuff shot and turned it easy. Those cheapshots I have heard really knock a deer for a loop......

Way to go, I too shot my first deer this year with a ML and it was an experience in and of itself. Too bad our hunting season is over as of last Saturday because I got the itch.
