Maximum Range
Just curious to see what each of you think your maxium hunting range is with your BP gun and favorite hunting load. Open sights and/or with a scope.
Mine is 100yds, with open sights using 2 50gr pyrodex pellets and a 260gr Knight Lead Saboted bullet. Edited by - irishcajun on 03/01/2002 07:08:32 |
RE: Maximum Range
I took a doe at 155yds with my knight 45 cal this past season but had to pass up a very big buck at 267 yds.I was using the power belts 225 gr with 110 grs. of pyro select

RE: Maximum Range
irishcajun I have a scope on my wolverine and even though I am not quite sighted in at 100 yards I feel very confidant that 100 yards is well within my range, I am shooting the same load and bullet as you. I would be interested to hear from anyone the maximum range on this load, what I call a maximum range is the range where if properly hit they are DOWN for the count.

RE: Maximum Range
I would be comfortable out to 125yds with my current favorite load (348gr Powerbelt Aerotip & 115gr Cleanshot) without having to adjust any sights or scope.
I'd be willing to bet that upping the powder to 125gr would allow me accurate 150yd kill shots - I just don't have a local range that long to check it out. "Every moving thing that liveth, I give unto you as meat" (Gen 9:3) Trust God..........but keep your powder dry! |
RE: Maximum Range
100 yds. or less using either 90 gr. of FFg and roundballs for deer or 110 gr. of FFg and 430 gr. T/C maxi-balls for elk out of my .54 cal. Renegade. Works out real well for me because P.O.I. are close enough too the same that I don't have to change my sights. Also should mention that I had T/C install their peep-sight on my gun.

RE: Maximum Range
CVA mag-bolt 150. in 45 cal.with 3x9 scope.
I shoot 3 50gr. pyrodex pellets and a 225 power belt bullet. I took a 6pt. at 125 yrds. this year, and feel good about 150 yrds. would try one out to 200 yrds. if it was a broadside and had a good soild rest. I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry. |

RE: Maximum Range
I shoot a T/C Encore. I will shoot with confidence out to about 150 yards. I shoot 130 grains of pellets and use a T/C PTX in a 250 grain sabot. I have targeted out to 225 yards and the bullet dropped about 5". I am going to try the powerbelts this summer.

RE: Maximum Range
I'd say I would have to stay within 150yds. The Knight Disc. is accurate out past 200yds.,But I'm not. I shoot 250grn. Barnes MZ sabots with 150gr. of pellets.

RE: Maximum Range
Knight.45,W/3-9x Scope;180gr Hornaday HP/XTP over 130gr Clean Shot(Loose).I would/could make a clean kill out to 150.Up the bullet to 200-220gr,I would attempt and be confident out to 200yrd,clean kill with this gun.(that's a braodside shot with gun rested,no wind).
IMO any modern Smoke Pole, side lock or in line,"Set up Correctly",in the hands of a Man/Woman who "Knows the Weapon" can make a clean kill at 200yrds.Our great grand daddys did it with 1/2 the gun we all shoot with today! |
RE: Maximum Range
I try to restrict my shots to under 125yds. However, I believe my .54 is capable of further "if" the situation were just perfect (standing game, solid rest, time to sling up, time to execute a clean shot, etc). This is with a peep and a 1/16th inch white bead on the blade. It will put every shot into the chest cavity of a deer silhouette at 150 yards under perfect range conditions with a decent margin for error.
I believe my Savage is capable of 200yd shots if the situation were perfect as outlined above (1.5-5X scope). But, until such time as I can thoroughly test it at that distance I wouldn't be willing to risk the shot. I took a single shot at 200yds from the bench this fall at a deer silhouette and put it solidly into the chest cavity (with a 1X scope). Not certain if it's capable of doing it multiple times however. To be quite honest, I'd prefer to shoot animals much closer if given a choice. |
