Default CVA Staghorn 1:32 twist good load?

I bought the Stag horn it has a 1:32 twist. What loads work well in the rifle. I have other inlines but for the price and it is for my 14 yr old daughter I couldn't go wrong.

a 1:32 twist means it is an older model Staghorn. Congratulations... my friend has the same rifle as you. In fact I attempted to purchase a 1:32 twist but was not able to get one and settled for a 1:28 twist. If the rifle were mine, I would try some of the following loads...

With the 1:32 twist it should be an exceptional conical shooter. I think I would try some of the CVA Buckslayer 300 grain bullets with about 80 grains of Pyrodex RS. If your daughter is going to shoot it, tone them down just a little and see how they do with 70 grains. Recoil should not be too bad. Some of the 320 grain REAL bullets might work good out of your rifle. They shoot good out of the 1:28 twist with 90 grains of Pyrodex RS and homemade lube.

You might also want to try some maxiball. They normally come in 370 grain and with 70-100 grains of powder should take any large animal you might encounter. I just purchased some cast maxi for a reasonable price to shoot out of my 1:48 twist rifles and I am going to try them in my inlines also. In fact I was shooting them with 70 grains of Goex FFFg out of my flintlock with some impressive results the other day.

As for sabots, all I can suggest is to try some different size sabots and see how they act. With that twist, they should stabalize a heavy sabot well. Perhaps something in the 300 grain range with a moderate powder charge...

My friend hunts with the REAL conicals in his. He shoots 80 grains of powder. As for his distances, he is not forced to shoot over 75 yards. He mounted a RED DOT on his and although he is not a target shoot has been able to take a deer every year with it so far. Also they REALs must be easy to load because he suffered a stroke years ago, and does not have full use of his one arm but still manages to hunt with the rifle and load it.... He shoots of a set off shooting sticks....

Sounds like he landed one of the original staghorn rifles, I would stick with conicals with that gun since that is what it was designed for they made them 1 in 32 before the days of sabots you may try powerbelts I bet they would do good with that twist rate.

I'm going to echo what someone else said. Try Powerbelts. I had a Hunterbolt in 1/32 and it shot them extremely well. It just so happened that it was also the one bullet I didn't want to shoot.[:@] Best any midweight sabot (which was what I wanted to shoot) would do was about 3".

Those 1-32" twists back then had a little deeper groove. The best sabot remedy for them were a little heavier bullet. I recommend trying T/C Shockwaves 300 grain & Harvester sabot/bullets in 300 grain for best fit. If you live near a Cabelas, Precision-packaged bullets like the Dead Center in 340 grain would be my first choice to try.

Just my opinion on what's best for that rifle... others may vary.

I just got GREAT results over the Labor Day weekend with 100 grains of Triple seven pellets and the Hornady 240 grain XTP sabot...MUCH improved groups over the 260 grain Powerbelts I had been using...

My 1:32 Staghorn likes 350 gr T/C Maxi-Hunters over 90 gr. Pyrodex. I don't like shooting sabots out of it because of the rapid fouling. Accuracy wasn't that great either. I might try some Powerbelts this year though. I'm going out to sight in a scope today.

I have a CVA in 1/32 twist.

I shoot the Powerbelts, usually 300 grain Aerotip with 70 or 80 grains of Pyrodex.

Even with 70 grains I can keep 4 shots out of 5 on a paper plate out to 200 yards. I have a 1.5-4x28 scope on it.

With only 70 grains of powder it shoots very smoothly and hits your shoulder about as hard as a 16 or 20 gauge shotgun.

The biggest downside of the light powder load is the bullet drop. I had to calculate rise/drop at 25 yard increments. I then wrote them on the back of a business card, laminated it and taped it to the left side of my stock. 300 grain and 70 grains powder gave me a drop of about 14 inches at 200 yards, when zeroed at 100 yards, if I remember correctly. (Don't have the card in front of me.) So, that gives me a good estimate of holdover when putting the sights on the deer.

The other most critical setting with light loads is to make sure the bullet is seated firmly on the powder and consistantly tamped. The lower velocity makes this critical. Lightweight ramrods (like the ones that come with the CVAs) make this hard as well. No shortcuts, you just have to learn to get the feel of it.

Good luck to you and your daughter.
