RE: T/C Black Diamond

I think the musket caps throw more fire into the breech without a doubt. If I were using pellets and had to choose, then it would be the musket caps. Since I use the loose it really makes no difference. They might also make a difference on a wet damp day hunting. I guess I would prefer the musket caps.

When your hunting with cold fingers you are going to be able to grab the musket caps with your fingers better then the #11. I do think the #11 caps are a good ignition system. My Knight Wolverine shoots them and works just fine.

Thanks again, good info, ya them #11 can be pretty tricky, my Dad changed from them to muskets but I haven't got to shoot with him since. I put on my musket nipple, figured I'd try them first since I've tried the 11s already.

Trapper T, I am using CCI musket caps on my Black Diamond. They work fine with loose powder, haven't ever tried them with pellets. They are easy to prime the nipple with no tools, and fall out of the breech when you pull the striker back. They also seem to stay put on the nipple well. Simplicity at its best! But....I would still like to try CCI 209 primers, (not the 209M's) to see how they perform, just haven't been able to find any around here yet. Only thing I can find so far are Winchester 209's and they are a little hotter primer than the CCI's I am told. Good luck with your new T/C!

MOTurkeyTamer I use the Winchester W209 primers in my Black Diamond XR and they work great. I have not had any problems with them actually. I stopped shooting Triple Se7en out of the Black Diamond and went to Goex FFFg instead. So the dreaded Triple Se7en crud ring (that is not a problem if you swab between shots like your supposed to) is not a problem. I like the way real black powder shoots. Sure there is more fowling, but I never took up this hobby to stay clean...:D

You should give the Winchester a try. I think you will really like them. CVA by the way sells an excellent 209 "steel" primer remover/single primer applicator. It is a lot better and more solid then the plastic one that came with our rifle. If your ever in a store and spot one it would be to your benifit to pick one up....

I use the Winchester W209 primers in my Black Diamond XR
Wal-Mart here in town carries the W209 primers but I've kinda kept away from them because of some of the posts I read with people having problems (or so they think) with their 209 primers. I've just used the musket caps so far. If I can't locate any CCI's, I'll just run out to Wally World and pick up some Winchester's and give 'em a try. Good to hear you have had good luck with them, I've seen some of your posts with pics of your targets. Can't argue with the accuracy you are getting out of your XR!;):)

You are right MOTurkeyTamer.. there are some primers out here that actually damage the 209 nipple by damaging the wire band on it. Winchester is all I can get around here and all I have ever shot other then some musket caps. Looking at the carton the primers come in I see the W209 code in the corner. My understanding is, that has some relation to the intensity of the primer.

:D To be honest, my rifle shot the best using the musket caps.... So if that is what your using and you have good luck with them, I sure would not change them.

Sounds good Gents.... I'll look to try the CCI brand muskets, I've always liked CCI in my .22 and in my .17HMR. And even their .44mag has been a pretty good cartridge...

I have the TC woods rifle which was the forrunner to the Black Diamond. It is a great shooter. I use Musket caps and two 50 grain pellets with the 300 grain Hornady XTP and TC magnum Sabots. I put different sights on it. Scopes are not legal in South Dakota either. I just checked the drawing results and I got my 2004 muzzle loader tag. They even have a few left over so I will pick up another one.

Scopes during muzzleloader season in Wisconsin are not legal also. I will be trying out the scoped Black Diamond during the regular modern season.

My "new" favorite muzzleloader for the muzzleloader season is my .58 caliber T/C Renegade shooting round ball. This rifle has a Green Mountain Barrel on it and is exceptionally accurate with 100 grains of Goex FFg, a moose milk patch and a Speer Round ball. It will be the first year hunting with the .58 caliber also.

Did you draw tags for deer or what? Good luck with your hunt. :)

Well Gents...I took her out for a test drive on Sat. put 20 rounds of Powerbelt 348 grainers w/ 2 777 pellets... and I got to a comparable group that Cayugad's picture showed except I was about 3 inches to the right. I'll get that windage adjusted and probaby elevate it a touch. But I sure had a blast...(no pun intended) with her.... I think I'm really gonna enjoy using a smoke pole. But all in all she shot pretty well and with the triple se7en she cleaned like a dream. I remember this spring when my Dad and I took his Tradtions out and shot with Pryodex, I was thinking maybe this aint' so much fun.Seemed like it would take 15-20 minuets to get it clean, but the T/C with 777 I was back to shooting within 5 minutes:D
