SST AT 200 YDS
 

I have read a few articles on the new Hornady SST bullet being accurate and having enough energy to make an efficient kill at 200 yards. I' m shooting an Encore with 777 powder and the SST 250 gr. Has anyone done any playing with this new combination, and what are the results? The one article claims to have sighted in 3 inches high at 100yds and hit 3 inches low at 200 yds. A six inch drop from 100 to 200 is more than acceptable for me. Who' s tried it?

For the Savage only: 43 gr SR-4759, 28 ga base, 250 SST (with supplied sabot), and Win 209 primer

Shot a 3-shot group a couple months back with same components and 42 gr SR-4759 that measured .785" @ 200 yards.

coyote hunter, someone with limited experience and novice shooting skills as yourself really should not even consider a 200 yard shot no matter what the weapon. Stick with shots less than 35-45 yards for the time being and you will have more luck. Good Luck[8D]

EWC...what is a 28ga. base? Have you tried 4227, 4198, 3031. All the Springfield Trapdoor loads work great. Works in a 45/70 and a 50 cal. Also, the Omega rifle in 50cal works great , 45 gr. 3031...wonderful. 180gr. To all those guys bitching about traditional smoke. Smokeless loads give you more power, better kills, and it is still a front stuffer.

rbduck what kind of smokeless loads and bullets have you shot out of your Omega. This is interesting every thing I read and Hear from Thompson Center is not to use smokeless powder in any of there muzzlrloaders.

I wanted to try the smokless powder so that is why I got a Savage because it is made to shoot both types.I know that about 6 out of 10 use smokless powder in their knights and T/C but its their a-- not mine.
I read awhile back that a young fellow in Ga. was shooting smokless in a knight and the barrel blew up and a piece went through his head killing him.Was at the range one day and a youn g fellow came in to shoot his omega and I asked him what he was shooting and he said IMR ---- and it would drive tacks @100,well I got to watching him shoot ( after I moved a ways back)and I didn't see any group,his shots were all over the target board.One gun shop owner gave me a 30 minute speech as to why He figured the Knight was strong enough to shoot smokless.
Years ago I saw a man that had shot some of his friends reloads in his new Rem 270 that his wife had got him for xmas,part of his face and his right hand was missing.That rifle was made to withstand lots of pressure but there is a limit as to how much pressure.

Oldsnow, check your loading manuals on the trapdoor loads(45/70) and all of these loads are very low pressure and will match bp pressures. Anyone who has burst their barrel was loading silly high pressure loads . If you use the Ruger #1 loads, the pressures are way too high. But the trapdoor stuff works fine. Just stick to the lighter loads. All the barrels are mild steel from the Omega rifle to the Rem 700 centerfire. The only hardened barrels today are in machine guns. Every blowup we have heard of upon investigation, we found the owners were using magnum charges of powder.Remember in loading muzzleloaders or any rifles, start with light loads.
