What Black powder gives you the best accuracy with conicals ? I have a Blk. Dia. XR .50 cal. I am going down into Ark. to Powder Inc. to pick up 5 lbs. I can mix n match. I only have the musket nipples for the Blk. Dia. on hand but i can also buy couple of the #11 nipples if that would be a better ignition.

I personally like Swiss when it comes to real black powder. It's consistency is unmatched. If you can't find Swiss, try the newer Olde Eynsford from GOEX. It's as close to Swiss in consistency as you will find. Both are a little pricey but well worth the expense when you can meter out a consistent load time after time.

They have those in stock, among several other brands n grades. Would the 2F be a better choice than the 3 F ? I am setting this Blk. Dia. up strickly to hunt Elk in idaho during those controlled hunts n such.

Personally and this is just me, I would use #11 mag caps or better yet the RWS Dynamit Noble 1075+ caps. Normally you can get a better cap seal on a #11 nipple.

Have you thought about using Triple Seven 2f powder - you can find it in many places than true Black Powder these. It is a very energetic powder and produces the about the same if not higher ballistics as does Swiss. Also is way less corrosive than real black powder.

sabotloader i had not ck'ed on or about the Trip 7. Reason was my manual did not say it was allowed. It said Blk. powder or pyrodex

Seems many members here have used it in inlines like mine & simular. I went to Hodgdon n read up on it plus did alot of Forum reading. They be right proud of a pound of it fer sure

It is a Black Powder sub so it is a legal load for any Thompson Center - especially an XR, which at the time was TC's Mag ML.

You have put the bug on me. I will find a pound of it somewhere to start load practice. I have some old odds n ends to fling out at a target no matter what the groups are. Some needed range time for me then. I have some round balls n some of those Pa. 240 gr ball-et's. Have some GP 385 gr HPHB, plus some sabots to play with. I will have to order some of bigger conicals to get the Elk load going.

I went to my favorite local Reloading Shop. He did not have any #11 mag caps,he had some Schuetzen musket caps. So i bought a 100 of them to try, he had the Trip 7 n i picked up pound in 3f. Twas cheaper from him than Bass Pro over in Springfield. Also had the Hornady .454 balls for my .44 1860 Army at lower cost. I have a 3x9 scope on Blk. Dia. to ck accuracy. I also have the open sights on it but will get the rear peep this yr.
