Default Beginner in Shooting Black powder.

Hi I just recently bought a traditions buck stalker black powder. I also picked up some hornady great plains 385 grain and some triple seven granulated powder. I was wondering if anyone had some load data or where to start? I am new to it all and wanting all the information I can get.

Watch this youtube video and read all of the the replies to the questions.
Sighting in a new Buckstalker with a 300 grain bore size conical, 100 grains of pellets, took 4 shots to sight in,
Ended up obtaining 4 inch groups at 100 yards with only a quick swab between shots.
Your conical is heavier, but the starting load may not be much different.
He was using 100 grains of 777 pellets (2).
I would start with 90 grans of the 3F 777, and increase 10 gains (or even decrease 10 grains) to see how it groups.
Just get it on a paper target at short range at first.
Your heavier conical may produce more felt recoil, so don't go overboard with the powder.
100 grains of 3F 777 equals about 115 grains of Pyrodex 2F.
No need to over-compress the powder too much because doing that can cause erratic velocities
But make sure to seat the conical on top of the powder charge with at least light to moderate pressure.
Switch to a lighter bullet if your results are not satisfactory, or if the felt recoil is too heavy.
One of the replies mentions the conical that he is using is a Traditions Full Bore Bullet 300 grain No Sabot Required Model #A1820.
It looks just like a Hornady FPB except those come in 2 sizes - 300 and 350 grains.

100gr of powder is a pretty hot load for a soft lead conical. Better off in the 80-90gr range max. Soft lead performs very well in the 1300ish fps range.

Thanks to the both of you I will probably start at 80 grains and work up from there. The gentlemen at cabelas and sportsmans and also at the local black powder shop recommended the triple 7 FFG instead of the FFF. So that's what I ended up buying.

Since you are in Idaho and required to shoot conicals during the ML seasons i would look up BullShop bullets. Dan sells a large variety of muzzleloading bullets for around $50/100 delivered. Best to email him but he has a couple in the 400gr range that im pretty sure you would like better than the Great Plains. Traditions are often tight bored so you might need them sized a little smaller. My guess is about .501-.502

Get some lubed wool felt wads to protect the base of the conical. Triple7 burns kinda hot and usually accuracy is better with a wad.

Triple7 can also leave a hard fouling ring near where the bullet and powder meet. Its called a crud ring and its produced after firing. You will probably need to swab after each shot with a lightly damp patch. Then a dry patch to remove excess moisture before reloading.
