Elk hunt rifle

So whats your opinion on rifle and load combo for elk hunt ? The load choices are based on what tbe guns currently are shooting with good accuracy , they could be adjusted if necessary i guess

you need big bullets on elk. not fun tracking one with a bb gun hole in it.

1847, give it to em good & hard. Then, hit em again. Those are some tough, tough critters!

I'm hoping for Elk #10 this year & all w/ MLs. I always use 290 gr. Barne's T-EZ and 120 grs. BH 209. Most of the time, I punch the whirling saw blade of a bullet right through em up to 180 yds. OUCH!

Dunno where you are going to hunt Chet so I haven't a clue. Mountainous and woody or open field where there may be some longer shots? For the first I'd vote for the Mountaineer. Hell probably for the second as well. If I remember correctly you are pretty accurate out to 200 with that one. And those dead centers are supposed to be pretty sporty at range for terminal performance. You have to pardon me for a minute, I'm still giggling over your last choice :D :D :D

BTW, the reason I didn't say your Zombie Omega, your getting a bit long in the tooth there kiddo and that there rifle looks a mite heavy :D I speak from many long years of carrying a heavy azz rifle in Elk country. Trust me, you don't wanna!!

Out of those choices I'd go with the White and Bullshops bullet.
But for me, I'd love to get an elk with my .58 PRB Renegade. But I'm a real fan of sidelocks.

That would be a Traditions and and Round ball Chet! :D

I will be hunting the Black Hills so its mountainous and trees but
A few areas where possibly a 200+ shot might be needed

I think I am getting psychic! I know who voted for the aerolytes!

As for me, I own a white and some bullshops and I really want to kill an elk with it, so you might be psychic on my choice too!

If I was to do a poll, I would put up a picture of a 400 class bull, then ask, if that elk stepped out, which of the combos would you chose?? I am still happy with my answer

Yeah Chet, I was thinking that was the rifle you were talking about. And I remembered how well you shot with it. THAT would be the rifle I would take. And 260 grains is more than enough bullet to drop an Elk. Killed a lot of Elk with a hell of a lot less! BUT I personally wouldn't push it past 150 yards though. Just for insurance. Maybe on a whitetail I would take it out to 200 or maybe even 250 but an adult Bull Elk is a whole hell of a lot more to get through that a mangy little old scruffy whitetail :D
