Sabot question
Hi guys, I'm shooting a Thompson Center Mag express sabot(add your own bullet,T/C number 8281) I'm trying to buy these in bulk but can't seem to find out if they are MMP HPH 12 or HPH 24 or something else. I called T/C and they told me hornady makes their sabots and that all the information the girl could give me. Anyone have a idea what I could do? Thanks

Years ago, the TC Mag Express Sabot may have been the MMP standard "Black Sabot",
http://mmpsabots.com/store/black-sabot/, not either the HPH-12 or 24. Since then, it may have been supplied by a variety of suppliers. Pictures on the Midsouth site look similar for the Hornady, and the TC. I don't know if the current TC is produced to a specification, by Hornady, to be similar to the "TC Black" or if it's simply identical to the Hornady branded item. Other sources here have said that the "TC Black" is similar loaded diameter to the HPH-12. |
IIRC the more recent T/C sabots were the HPH-12 and HPH-24. Early sabots may have been the MMP Short Black but those are very tight loading. The powder side of the Short black sabot looks much different than the HPH series and its very short.
The 12 and 24 look very similar but there is a difference in the powder side. Ignore the color. Both are normally black. Sabot on the left is a HPH-12. Sabot on the right is a HPH-24. The number on the HPH-24 looks more like its been typed or stamped. The number on the HPH-12 looks more like it was etched into the mold. ![]() I believe the most recent production T/C 50x45 sabots are the HPH-24s. The others would be very tight in newer T/C bores. |

And sorta she is correct - Hornady contracts with MMP to build the sabot to their specifications - so I guess they can say they build it. http://mmpsabots.com/store/hph-sabot-series/ |
Thanks Guys, I looked on the bottom of the sabot and the numbers are stamped or typed. They are newer sabots so I'm guessing they're MMP HPH-24. Thanks again for the help.

The black H5045's with a number on the inside bottom of the cup are Harvester smooth sabots. I have no MMP HPH24s to verify if a number exists on theirs. No number exists on the MMP three petals and no number exists on the MMP original plastic sabots that do not contain any HPH status.. |

This question got me curious about something. I went to my old ML bullet box and dug out an old box of 300 grain 50/45 shockwaves that had the sabots with. The sabots with them are 4 petal and APPEAR to be MMP EZ loads. There aren't any numbers on the underside (pressure cup) but INSIDE the sabot on the bottom are stamped sequentially 2 to 22 with a couple of repeats of 6 and 21. Mold sequence maybe?

No need to verify if the HPH-24 has the numbers. Ive got over a 1000 of them. I can assure you they do just like the photo shows. MMP 3P-EZ and original MMP Short black don't have numbers to my knowledge. Ive never seen them on the 3P-EZ but i seldom use them. Im sure my Short Blacks do not. I have a huge supply of them also. |
