Attachment 41088
Video 1 Video 2 Attachment 41091 The photo shows the jugs after the trigger was pulled. Range was 25 yard. Powder charge was 80g Blackhorn. The plywood has a caliber size hole through. The first jug was blown in half. The one half was found 15' left of the horse. The other half was found 15' right of the horse. The second jug was toasted. The third jug has a hole in and a hole out. The boolit bounced off the fourth jug, but didn't hurt it. The boolit was found on the ground about 3' to the side of the horse. Five of these hollow points averaged 346.2 grain each. The mushroomed boolit weighs 340.8 grain. The mushroom is 15/16 " at the widest portion. Attachment 41084 Attachment 41090 |
Dat der isa ting ah beauty.
|
Wow ... that is beautiful. Devastation, expansion, that would do the trick on the deer population.
|
Another great test.
Ron I meant to ask, Did you find primer removal easier on these lighter conicals and after you cleaned out your flash channel? |
This is one of the bullets i may use this year for deer hunting on the conservation area. I never would have guessed it would retain that much weight. 80gr is probably a bit high for this bullet.
|
Naaaaa 350rgainer 80gr is just about right for a full bore. Might be a BIT of a shoulder whacker but nothing unmanageable.

Didn't even think about the leading, remember I'm a bit new to BH and I forget it's a little heat hotter than T7
|
I need to run these over the chrono. The SuperDISC loved them with 70gr of BH209.
2 lower shots loaded easier. It appears i only resized half of them. Top 3 were very tight starting by hand. Ed's wonderful .451 350gr HP conical at 50 yards..5 shots. ![]() |

I really like this bullet. I would probably like it more as a flat point but that mold is no longer offered by Lyman. It turns out i did only resize half the boolits. The unsized were stiff loading but still easier than a sabot.
I will need to try them with 60gr and then run both over a chrono. IMO this bullet does not need much speed and more than likely around 1300fps is ideal. Thanks again....GREAT bullet. |
Guess who gets to hunt at the conservation area managed hunt?:woot:
|
Now that was an impressive 50 yard group. And an impressive bullet to boot. Even just 50 grains of 3-777 was all it took to plant a nice looking deer! I have lowered the powder charges I used to shoot down to 65 grains. Maybe I should try some lower even.
|
Dave, I forget how fast the 350gr bullet was traveling with 50gr of 777-3F, but I think it was either 1050 or 1150fps. I have to sight in my grandsons ML again soon and I'll confirm it with my chronograph.
|
Assuming a .213 BC although i think its a tiny bit better.
At 1150fps MV this bullet should still have 800FPE at 100 yards At 1300fps MV this bullet should still have 1000FPE at 100 yards At 1400fps MV this bullet should still have 1070FPE at 100 yards Sighted in at 75 yards it should stay very close to not more than 2" above or below the line of sight out to 100 yards with a 1.5" scope height. |
This has me wondering. I have a bunch of .458" cast bullets that didn't pan out in my .45-70. I'm wondering if I can get a die and downsize them to .451" for my .45?
Is this possible or too much reduction? |
I size a Lyman 457121PH down to .452 to shoot out of my .451 White rifle and it works ok but that is a lot to size in one step. It might be better to use a two step sizing process for what you are doing.
|
Art is probably right, but my 350gr HP mould from Lyman casts them at .458 and I just use my Lee .452 sizing die. It sizes them at 451.5. So far I have not seen any issues when I resize them in one step.
|
Kind of also depends on the material as well. Pure lead or hard cast. Pure lead is a breeze to size down that much. Hard cast, depending on just how hard, can be a bit of a pain to get more than a few down at a time.

Lee sells a standard .451 .452 and a .454 without the need to order a custom die. I normally use a .454 first before going smaller.
Bronko before you buy a sizing die, you may want to verify your actual land to land. CVA 45s can run pretty large. GM's and T/C's should be close to .451-.452 I prefer mine sized about .001 to .002 over land to land but im using BH209 most of the time. |
Now I'm not sure if I need a .451 or .452". The bullets are probably hard cast as they were for my .45-70. I can get 2 dies and size to .454 and then to either 451 or 452 which should work. What do you think?
I have to look around my mess of bullets and see what I can try to plug the bore. I might have a couple .45 Maxiballs laying around. |
Bronko, from my limited experience with Lee sizing dies, they seem to size the bullets .5 smaller than indicated. e.g. My 451 sizing sized them to .450.5, 452 die sized them 451.5
|
Ed I just went into my gun room and took one of the .458s and a plastic mallet and gently tapped one into the muzzle about 1/2 way then tapped it back out with the mallet and a pair of vise grips.
I measured the diameter of the lands and grooves and came up with diameters of .448" and .451" respectfully. You think What diameter would you suggest for the final size? A .451 or .452. |
Me, I think I would try the .452 sizing die as from the Lee sizing dies that I purchased they sized the bullet .5 smaller than indicated.
