Yeah, thought so. The .475 is still too small for the dumb Colorado laws.
I guess the .54 is the only way to end up with a bullet .500 or bigger. |
Seriously, look for a MK85 in 54cal. They typically sell for much less than a 50cal. They are also slightly lighter. The barrel OD is the same as a 50cal but the bore is larger (obviously). The balance is fantastic for a full length barrel and all MKs have true Timney triggers. The Speer 50 325gr HP is a near perfect match for Triple7 or even Pyro speeds. The cheap Rainier 50 335gr HPs should do fine also. Alexander Arms uses both in 50 Beowulf ammo in the 1800-1900fps range.
A step down is the LKII Wolverine. The trigger is not quite as nice but still really good. I think they even made some in SS. |
I found one, but i'm hesitating. What if Co changes the law, and makes the .50 legal? I prefer all the options a .50 has.

Ive shot 452, 458s and 50s in sabots from my 54-120. They can also shoot 44s but i never use them. The 458s are SUPER tight in Harvester 54x452 sabots. The Barnes 300gr 458SOCOM seems to be the only one i can get down my barrel without popping a blood vessel. :D
A Lee .454 lube sizer fixes that issue with most bullets. Lehigh makes a 50cal Bloodline but i think it is a 350gr. It might be a bit long to stabilize at slower speeds...Im not sure since i never tried them. |
I'm still looking at Hawkens, so I may not have any decisions to make if I go that way.
Isn't it sad that the .50 177gr PRB is legal in all seasons for elk, and a 300gr .50 sabot isn't? They need someone more knowledgeable making the laws. |
Those are too good looking to shoot.
