TC Barrel Makers
Does anyone know for sure the barrel makers and their corresponding mark on TC barrels? Who made those marked with a spade, and the iron cross, and any others?

In the beginning TC had two companies building barrels for them..
Shilen and Montana Barrel - I think those were the two. I have both and use to remember the signs and the codes.
A 'spade' was one of them and I forget what the other was when I get home later in the weekend I can look.

You know I think you are right - Douglas instead of Montana Barrel co.
I have a friend that knows for sure but I am out of town and do not have his contact info...
I know the barrel with the 'spade' was really the hot for awhile - think the otherone had a M or W stamped on it and that is why I was thinking Montana Barrel Co.
I do not think i have ever seen an Iron Cross on a TC.

found this
I believe Sharon made barrels for Thompson and so did Douglas and Green Mountain.
I'm currently making barrels on some of the machinery and possibly some of the tooling once owned by Hal Sharon and some of the tooling came from Green River Rifle Works. I believe this equipment was sold before Sharon started making TC barrels though.
I'll make some inquiries when I get to the shop, if any one knows the answers it will be Joe, he owns the stuff, I just run it for him.
I believe barrels marked with a large 'M' on the underside were Green Mountain barrels, you might take a look to see if yours have it.

Sharon and Douglas both made barrels for the early TC's. Sharon barrels were marked with a spade and Douglas were marked G.R. Douglas. I don't know who made the barrels with the cross.

Do you have an early gun?
I got curious about the topic because it came up on another forum and no one seems to have the answer. Then I went the GOOGLE route and found a dozen or so posts on various forums and the results were the same. A lot of "I heard" and "Someone said", but nothing concrete.
About an hour ago I sent the following email to TC customer service and posed the question to them. It will be interesting to see what the reply will be.
I'm interested in the history of TC Hawken and Renegade rifles. Perhaps one of the "old hands" around TC can help me.
I keep seeing posts in a number of different muzzle loading forums that early TC Hawken and Renegade rifles had barrels made by various companies, including Shilen, Montana and Douglas, and the symbol (such as the iron cross or spade) on the underside
of the barrel near the breech end identified the barrel maker. But no one seems
to know for sure how many different barrel makers were used or which symbol
applied to which maker.
Can you provide a list of the barrel makers used by TC and their corresponding
symbol?
