(offtopic) powder coated my new shotgun
 

wanted to share my latest project with yall.

I picked up an western auto 310a (mossberg 500ab) a few weeks ago. the guy who owned it did a pretty bad paint job on it. could wipe it off with just water



going to skip all the stripping process.

Quick note: these is the first time I have powder coated something other then bullets.

the set up, crafts men powder coat gun, harbor freight black powder coat. a bolt and two nuts with a copper wire to hang the part to bake. an old oven to bake, foil to keep the powder from getting inside the receiver

the bolt was way smaller then the stock bolt so I used an nut both on the outside and inside to hold the receiver running the copper wire touching the inside receiver.
cleaned with acetone.

ended up coating twice, must of rubbed some powder off when I was moving it to the oven the first time.

all and all, i think I did a good job for my first try at powder coating something other then bullets

thanks, just a few more part to wait for. doing a couple of upgrades. adds something to my rebuild arsenal

By gosh and by gum Corey, you've done a darn good job there and it's a darn sight better looking than when you bought it!! Powder coat is very durable, I just hope you didn't get any of it into the critical areas that need to be kept smooth... it's a bugger to remove. I worked for a machine tool builder that did powder coating and if it got onto surfaces where it didn't belong it was a headache to remove.

from what it looks like, the foil I placed inside did it's job. I did not degrease inners so if there is I will take the razor blade and hope I can get it out. I got a little near where the bolt runs but I will be polishing every metal to metal contact area. I got a number of aluminum polish.



edit:
only place it get into on the inside was just at the ejection port. nothing on the rail for the slide. maybe alittle cleaning for the bolt that be it.

Hows the rest of the gun? Gonna powdercoat the barrel to match?

I can't I don't have a oven big enough to cure the powder coating. I know of a another way to do it. but I don't think it would come out as good. may just try to freshen the blue on the barrel.

I did see a cva timberline side lock with either a bed liner or powder coated barrel today it looked good.

wanting to do something to my flint lock maybe I figure out how to cure the barrel.
