3F black powder/in-line
Hello everyone,
I am currently shooting 90 gr. of 2F Black Powder, 230 gr. bullet, in my CVA Optima with a velocity of approx: 1620 per sec. Can I safely shoot 3F Black Powder instead of the 2F Black Powder? Can anyone tell me how much if any reduction in volume is needed to remain at the approx: same velocity? Thanks for your answers in advance. Vearl |

The recommended difference is 15% personally I have found 10 % to be more accurate as far as getting the same velocity on the chronograph. |
Yes the 3f will shoot fine. And the reduction... I agree with Lee. They claim 15% but at times I found the same charge as the 2f worked just fine. And since your rifle is able to handle 150 grains, that would not make a difference.

Thanks guys for your help. I have quite a bit of 3 F powder...so I guess I will shoot it up. Will try the 10 to 15 % reduction and see how that works.
Thanks again Vearl |
My standard load in my Knight Disc is 80grs FFF Goex behind a Hornady XTP 300gr .429 bullet, inside a plain green Harvester sabot...
In sighting in other's inlines most group the best with 80-85grs FFF Goex...I have used up to 100grs but never with good groups... |

Vearl Some of the fps recommendations put out by Hornady are not specific to where that bullet lands inside that deer. I have 100 230 gr XTPs packaged in my bullets box. At the time of purchase, I was naive to the differences between XTP and XTP Mags. I wish I was smarter back then (2007) and purchased the 45/240 Mags instead. What I have now are box of bullets growing dust. For I like to push my fps closer to 2K, with a bullet that I know will hold up. And to make matters worse for myself, at the same time, I purchased a box of 100 Speer Gold Dot 230s, which have the same concerns when pushing the envelope to their maximum-side fps allowances. Now to further embarrass myself and show I'm a gluten for punishment, I also purchased 180 grains in XTP and Gold Dots that day. I still have those too. Now I pickup that 15 lb box of bullets and wish it only weighed closer to 10 lbs. I didn't do my homework right that day and selling the bullets out-of-state to someone in need isn't worth the shipping costs-hassle. I may donate them to my local police department this spring. |
Triple Se7en,
I am shooting several different type of bullets. First is a soft lead cast .452 bullet. Another is 240 gr. swaged soft lead HP bullet. I do gave some Hornaday 230 HP XTP. Have not shot any of the Hornaday bullets yet. I'm enjoying shooting the lead cast and swaged bullets right now. I think with my average velocity that I am shooting , the probability of fragmenting with the Hornaday bullets are pretty slim since I am nowhere near the 2000 fps level. Howver I have been proven wrong many times. When I start shooting some of the Hornaday bullets , I will post my results. Thank you for your reply as it does give one thought on the XTP'S. Vearl |

Your 1600 fps is really too much for that bullet, should it hit a chunk of bone. I'm guessing that 230 XTP will begin to travel sideways at some point beyond 1600. I like / prefer lead also. Both new bullet styles I purchased from prbullet.com are lead. As our my No Excuse 460s, 285 gr Buffalo SSBs and T/C Cheap Shot 240s. But I still have copper too..... 200 gr SSTs and 195 gr Barnes Expanders, both saboted 50/40s. |

On their website, Hornady say the bullet is good for up to 1650 fps. ![]() ![]() |
Hunters: Do not use the 230 grain .451 Hornady bullet on deer. That bullet was designed for the .45 auto pistols. i don't care that Hornady now says the bullet is good for veoicities up to 1,650 fps: That is not so.
i've tracked two deer for other hunters that were shot with that bullet, both died lingering deaths. Hornady used to have a chart on their site that showed the recommended velocity data for all their XTP bullets. That chart shows the maximum design velocity of the .230 grain .451 bullet of about 1,200 fps. |
