Any suggestions on a new Flintlock??
 

The other day I was talking to Gordy at Knight rifles about making a Flintlock. I would like to see Knight make one in fall of 2015 for the 2016 hunting season. Any suggestions would be great and appreciated.

Start with a 54 cal with a 1:70 twist and then a .58 with a 1:83 twist at least a 32 inch barrel maybe even longer , especially on the 58 . Maybe a 42 or so for it . Then make the same gun in percussion. I love the percussion sidelocks . After that a Knight English Sporting Rifle in .451 with a 1:18 twist . I would buy one for sure .

I was thinking a 1/20 .451 26" useable barrel flintlock with a removable breech plug.

.54 caliber for sure, with a 15/16" barrel.
Any twist from 1:60 to 1:72 would be fine.
Hooked breech.
Factory peep sight on the tang.

The big question is ......... half stock or full stock. (HINT: I don't need another half stock. :s2:)

I find this amusing. The late (and great) Robin Williams once said..."Man spends the first 9 months of his life trying to get out of the womb, and the rest of his life trying to get back in". Now, are you in-line boys just getting bored or are you trying to get back to your humble beginnings as well? :biggrin:

My suggestion is... just buy a flintlock rifle. Lyman is good, T/C (used, they're no longer made), TVM (pricey, but made to order), or have one built by any number of custom builders out there,... it doesn't matter, just pick what suits your style of hunting and budget. Something with a slow twist, anywhere from 1:60 -1:72, LEARN to shoot it with real black powder and patched round balls. NOT sabots and jacketed bullets and Foghorn Leghorn 209 or whatever it is ya'll are tootin' your horns about. The slower twists will stabilize a larger ball better so if you want your rifle throwing a heavier ball, go with a slower twist. Then, go out and hunt with a REAL muzzleloader!!

Personally... I've always had a hankerin' to have a custom full stocked Hawken rifle built in .62 caliber with a 1:76 twist!!

Agree with a .54, agree with slow twist, would need to be deep, cut rifling, not button...

Would have to have a 38-44 inch SWAMPED barrel, a straight barrel would be a bear to lug around in the woods...A swamped barrel puts the weight between your hands and the rifle balances properly...

Lancaster design stock, daisy patch box, large Siler flintlock, AAA curly maple stock, Davis double set triggers...

And lets not forget to make the same rifles in Left Handed models. Especially with the Flintlocks. Grin
