Got A Doe This Morning

Hunted five days on Ft. Sill with my sidelock; saw a lot of nice deer and walked for miles and miles. Never got a shot.

Ths morning i hunted a property near some wheatfields. At about 07:25 down the trail comes a nice doe. Distance was about 100 yards.

Gun: TC Encore .50
Scope: 4X32 Zeiss Conquest
Powder: 120 grains of sifted 3F Goex Pinnacle
Bullet: Hornady 300 grain .452 Magnum
Sabot: Crush rib
Primer: Winchester shotgun

At the shot the ground blind was filled with smoke; could not see which way the deer went . Went to the spot where the deer was standing. Saw a big coyote nearby and took a crack at him. Coyote went down, jumped up and went into the tall grass.

Looked for the deer for about 15 minutes. Found her and a big puddle of blood about 100 yards from where she was shot. On entry the bullet hit a rib and left a huge entry hole. The bullet exited taking out two ribs and leaving a 1.5" exit hole. Both lungs were hit and the bullet clipped the heart.

Not sure how tha deer made it 100 yards after being shot. Looked around for about 30 minutes and could not find any blood trail leading from the spot where the deer was shot to her final resting place.

The doe weighed 95 pounds field dressed, big for SW OK. She had not nursed a fawn this year.

Turns out that coyote nearly beat me to my deer, not the first time that has happened. Date on photo is a typo.

Nice job falcon,

It's always amazed me how some deer are able to travel that far after taking such a lethal hit to the vitals while others just hit the ground or take just a few steps before going down. Glad to hear you smoked a Coyote to boot!

Very nice deer. Should be real good eating there over the winter. I have to agree with Blackpowdersmoke.... its a real testament to the will to live how a deer hit hard like that can go that far. The lack of a blood trail makes me ask... was she hit high in the chest?

Just a tad higher than i like. The chest was full of blood and gore.

Nice deer. Coyote seem to be running amuck this year.

We are overrun in West KS were I deer hunt and I just returned from SD Pheasant hunting and the yotes are a huge problem for all.

Perhaps this winter I'll try to knock down the population a bit. It will be a steep learning curve.

Nice going falcon. I don't like shoulder shots and almost always do the heart/lung broadside shot. The only time I have them drop on the spot is when the shot is high enough to shock the spine.

It's amazing how far they can run with the heart and both lungs destroyed. But when you consider that a deer can run about 35 m.p.h. (51 feet per second), they have to survive only six seconds to cover 100 yards.

Awesome! Nice story and pics. It's a mystery why that happens sometimes, but some deer just take a few seconds to realize they are dead...
