because of my issues with my other muzzleloader i am considering buying a second one so i will always have a back up should my cleaning not get me up to par. i am looking @ a traditions vortex i believe is the name. it has a 30" barrel and a leupold scope pre mounted. looks like a great gun but i was in a hurry and didn't wait around for help. does anyone know anything about these? they also had a traditions pursuit which has a cheaper scope on it and a 26" barrel. any thoughts?

I don't understand needing a 2nd gun, because you may not clean your main gun the way you should?

I have a Remington Genesis made by Traditions, and it shoots just fine.

The Vortek LDR has a 30" barrel, the striker-fire cocking mechanism, no external hammer and the accelerator breech plug.

I don't think I'd want a barrel that long, but other than that, it sounds like a good rifle.

You say you have issues with your other gun. What design is it? Sounds like you attribute your issues to cleaning. If that's the case, I'd make sure your new gun is BH 209 compatible, to simplify cleaning.

not sure that my problem is cleaning and i am concerned about what happens when i get in the field 90 miles from no where and it decides to malfunction. its malfunctioned twice here lately and i fixed it by tearing it down and cleaning but either i am not doing the cleaning correctly or it's a gun problem. i only have 2 weeks to work it out and a backup doesn't sound like a bad idea to me. besides what is wrong with having another gun? there not that i have justified my position let me know what you think of the traditions guns. thanks

Here's the thing. You buy a second rifle, You have to sight it in even with a pre mounted scope on her, never trust the manufacturer with sighting it in properly. Then you have to clean it. What happens you didn't clean it right and both don't go off. Look up on how to clean a BP rifle on line , there easy now. Not like cleaning a flint lock or a rifled musket.

Nothing wrong with having a second rifle. Personally I would not go Traditions.. but that is a personal preference of mine. Now I do own a Remington Genesis, and its a great shooting, easy to maintain rifle. No problems or complaints and it is made by Traditions. I do like my Optima better though.

Maybe we should be talking about your present gun, and why it malfunctions.

Tell us about the gun, load, how you clean etc. No gun should malfunction unless it has a built in problem, or the owner is doing something wrong. So, give us more info.

Do you really want a non stainless barrel if you are worried about your cleaning skills not being up to par? That Cerekote finish is not internal is it?

I sure would not.

Take a look at the new LHR Redemption. The "breech" plug is held in place by a collar that screws on to threads on the outside of the barrel. Use BH209 and it takes less than 5 minutes to clean it. You can use Hoppes etc. About every 25 -30 rounds I use a hand turnned drill bit to clean carbon built up in the flame channel. Has a lot of innovative features
