RE: 777 crud ring

Are you guys talking about the crud ring around the tip of the barrel?
The crud ring everyone is speaking of occurs where the powder charge and bullet meet in the barrel. After a few shots there is a powder residue ring left behind that can make cleaning between shots a real pain. I now take a pair of pliers to remove my ramrod, and God forbid I slip up and put a dry patch down the barrel first. Took 2 of us to pull that sucker out the last time I made that error. Short of taking a bottle of water to the range to pour down the barrel and swab it out, I don' t know how to get around it. Has anyone gotten a response from the company about the problem? It' s obviously not an isolated problem.

no crud ring here, but I think it because I shoot only 70 to 75 grains of triple 777 in the t/c 54cal. thunderhawk

I noticed that ring, too, in mine. I use a range rod and after each shot save up some good ol' spit and soak the patch. When it gets past the ring I run the rod up and down a few times to break it free then go on with a dry patch.

Hodgdon said that this would happen with any powder in the optima or the omega. CVA says its just 777. So who knows. So does anyone have a good answer on how to get this crud ring out.

RE: 777 crud ring

I have just switched to 777 and haven' t noticed the crud ring in the barrel. I did however have a heck of a time cleaning the nipple and breech plug, when I spit patched it at the range. Tonight I dry patched (pass 2 back and forth) immediatelty following each shot. This not only kept my groups tight but also made cleaning the barrel post range session an easy and quick affair. I have always used breakfree in my ML' s, so maybe that has helped..not sure. I am using 100 gr (pellet form) if that makes a difference and hornady sabots.
