Has anyone used these for deer hunting and how did they perform?

A couple family members and I have shot a few deer with them and have always had pretty good results.

From all I read of people that use XTPs for hunting, they are an excellent deer bullet.

i've used the Hornady .430 240 grain XTP bullet to kill about 25 deer. It does a good job on deer and hogs.

Alright ill give them a go. Getting pretty good acuracy with them also.

I killed some hogs and Deer with the .452 250grn and 300grn bullets. They did a fine job for me.

For my .50 I like the .429 or .451" 300 gr XTPs with appropriate sabots. And for my .45 I use 200 gr 10mm XTPs. All have performed excellent in both accuracy and terminal performance on game.

If my count is correct, i shot 3 deer with XTP. Them deer came home with, and went into the freezer.

Also i have tested XTP by shooting them into juice jug filled with water.

One deer that fell to the XTP left gut material on the snow when it ran off. This led me to believe i had gut shot it, but it turned out it was shot through both lungs. The diaphragm was pierced by something which then pierced the gut. At the time i thought it was pieces of rib bone, but thinking back on it, i am inclined to think the XTP bullet kinda came apart, and a piece of the bullet went through the diaphragm, and gut. Can't say for sure.

One thing i know for sure is, if i had nothing but XTP bullet, i would certainly be confident in using them on deer. It is my experience, XTP bullet will shoot right through deer, with no problem.

The dirt behind where i place targets, contains hundreds and hundreds of bullets that were shot from my rifles. The Deep Curl, and Nosler, and Barnes bullets are mostly all in one piece. Virtually every XTP bullet i have found in the dirt is in pieces. XTP bullets don't hold up when shooting rocks, and dirts, as well as other bullets do. Myself, i don't know anyone that hunts rocks and dirts.

All I use are the .45cal .452"dia 240gr XTP Mag with a black MMP HPH 24 Sabot. I have used these for ever it seems there what all My CVA Mlers like to shoot. Besides being devestating on Deer they shoot exceptional groups. I have never once lost a deer shot with one and I doubt I'll ever change to another bullet.

I was having an issue with the XTP when I used them. I know some others voiced concerns as well. I was killing deer with mine but the problem was I was getting no blood trail. I had more then one person tell me that this bullet was not really designed to travel as fast as a ML will shoot it and it can come apart on impact. The farm I hunt I am usually on a fence row so I am shooting into the open and can see where the deer runs to. I shot deer in 6 inches of snow and would not have found them had I not been able to track them. Here are some threads I was reading when I switched bullets.

I've killed 5 deer, one antelope, and one elk with the 300 grain XTP mag .452 bullets. I cannot complain. I found that through my rifle and pistol the 300 grain did a better job then the lighter grains.

I'm no expert, but the .452 300 gr XTP ( non magnum) will perform very well if the FPS are kept in the range that the bullet was designed for, and that's less that 1600 FPS. If you want a bullet (that almost the same) that will hold together better, than go with the Speer Deep Curl which can be shot at much higher velocitiy.

The XTP Mag was built for higher velocities and holds togeather better than the regular XTP.

I have used the .40 cal 200 grain XTP on multiple deer, and my hunting buddies exclusively use the .45 cal XTP in both 240 grain and 250 grain. Between the 3 of us we've probably taken 75 - 80 deer in the past 10 years with these bullets (mostly with the .45 caliber versions).

Our experience has been that the XTP is a very good bullet for deer hunting, with maybe one exception. You need to be careful about how fast you push it - it sometimes has a tendency to come apart at high velocities. Generally when this has happened, the deer still dies quickly provided good shot placement, though. I don't think we've ever lost a deer due to bullet failure- we've only lost a handful of deer, and that was due to poor shot placement.

We've used powder charges in the 70 - 100 grain range with good results.
