Resizing a Lehigh
#1
Some of you know I have this ongoing project to find a bore big enough or at least figure out a way to use the experimental Lehigh 45 and 50 cal bullets that I have on hand.
What I have found is once I get them throught the crown and get them loaded they shoot very well, actually a better than very well. Just can not bring myself to tossing them.
Both the 45 and the 50's are very tight in the Green Mountain barrels that I have. The 50's did work well in the White 504 U Mag.
This is my first outing with the U Mag the 50 cal Lehigh. It was a very easy load in this the Clerke 504 bore. I recently purchased a 504 White Lightning with a Wilson barrel and the fit there is even better.

The 45's are another story... I found a White Whitetail with a Wilson bore hoping it would be large enough for the 45's. It does have a larger bore than any of my Knight 45's but not large enough to redily accept the sabotless Lehigh.
Cayugad, then came to the the aid of the cause and resized some 45 sabotless to .451 and shipped them out to me.
I have never rezied a bullet so I was bit more than ignorant of the process but from his and others lead - I thought I would give it a try also.
With the .451's that Dave sent out I found they seemed a bit loose for the Knights and dropped to the bottom in the Whitetail. So I decided to go out and get a .452 resizer and try it myself.
I also remembered that I had an old Pacific Reloading press out in the garage some place that I could use with getting down my big double press reloading press. I found it - eventually - and just used some vice grips to attach it to the work bench. I was not sure if the V grips would hold it since Dave had mentioned that he had put so much pressure on his that it pulled a screw loose... But it worked - the first one I tried, I was not thinking it was going to work - but with enough pressure the barb portion of the bullet pushed through the die... WALA!!!!

So the results... The 452 fits the Whitetail perfect!!! and are just to tight for the Knights. I really wish I had tried some of those .451's in the Knight bore before sending them on to GM54-120. I did set them in the crown and I thought they were going to be to loose - I should have pushed one through. Scott sent me a meassage that they fit his Elite 45 really well. Dang I missed agan!
I have now ordered a .451 and a .501 so I should have what I need to shoot all of these bullets - even hunt with them.
Thanks to everybody that added suggestions of how to get this down...

I then wipr the bullets clean - but leave Alox in the bands - that little bit of lubrication might help them on the way out.

Glad that it worked for you. I had to liquid Alox them to get them through my sizer. But its good to see they went easy for you. Amazing what a .001 difference will do on brass.
Those .451 did seem loose in my White also. But I think had I left Alox on them, they would have shot fine. So you will have to try those others and see what happens.
Nice shooting on the .504 White. That is some good shooting and impressive velocities. What you hunting elephant? What diameter were those bullets?
