Great tracking tool
Guys, we all know that with their birght white light, the new LED flashlights are great for tracking/blood trailing deer after dark. Well Wally world is selling Coleman flashlights for $25 and $30 with 110 and 144 lumen ratings respectfully. I got a 110 lumen one and it is incredible. Even in full sunlight you can cast a beam at your feet. It literally turns the night to sunlight brightness whereever shined. A great itme to have in your pack or a gify for a fellow hunter.

That's all I carry now are the LED's, I have a small one I carry in my fanny pack that takes 3 AAA's, it last along time and is bright as heck. Untill I got the LED's I always carried a Mini Mag, no more.

BP - I've been using LEDs too for years. But you have to see this Coleman to appreciate it. It literally lights up the night.

I thought about getting that flashlight but I went with another one. Its just a little more but has a higher output. Not trying to hijack the thread but just adding another option. I have this flashlight and compared to a friends $150+ flashlight, it puts it to shame. http://www.shiningbeam.com/servlet/t...50-pls-/Detail

Semisane showed me a LED flashlight from Reilly Auto Parts and I got a couple of them. Well then low and behold they built one of them Auto Part Stores in the big city near me. My Dad had seen mine and he has a way of asking for things... not that he wants it mind you, but he should buy one, if he ever remembered, and he keeps this up until you just give him yours.. Then he puts it in a drawer and never uses them. But I purchased two more of them same lights. They are small and can be used as a bore light, they clip in your pocket, and are bright enough to help you out of a dark spot.

Why is this post okay but the MODS flagged the post about the T/C employees new gun? They seem the same to me both bringing up products sold by others. Just wondering:confused0024:

A tracking light can be too bright...I prefer one where you can adjust the beam...If it's too bright the light reflects back and blinds you...The one that I prefer is sold at Lowes Hardware, it's made by Coast...It's about $45, uses 3-AAA batteries and the beam is adjustable....
The great thing about an LED is it seems to make the blood glow, kinda like using a Coleman lantern... |

The great thing about an LED is it seems to make the blood glow, kinda like using a Coleman lantern... I use a 95 lumen LED (Fenix HL21 headlamp) and it's good for me. I also have the HP20 (230 lumen) lamp and it's too bright on high. |
I have the 75 lumen headlamp and it works for me. However, if I would ever feel the need to back out for a tracking job, I'd just go back to the vehicle and retrieve a propane lantern. If I am hunting with a climbing treestand, I'll have to go back to the vehicle anyway to put the stand and all my gear away before dragging the beast out, so grabbing a lantern is no big deal. Nothing lights up the night like one of those.

Flashlights are a great tool to have in the woods. But how many guys have a backup???
I was busy tracking a doe this year and my light started to dim on me. Nothing worse then being in the woods with no light. It really gets dark out there. I should have had a backup, but didn't. I was lucky that the light didn't go out completely! So now I carry a second light in my pack. I don't like dark. It is scarry!!! |

i track a lot of deer and elk for other folks, usually at night. i use a high intensity light with a blue lens.
For daytime tracking where the grass has red color on it, a small spray bottle of peroxide comes in handy. If the red color is blood it will fizz. Nothing beats a good tracking dog like the wirehaired dachshund a good friend owns. |

Make several small candles out of #11 cap tins. If you ever get caught out, light that candle. It gives a little light and makes fire starting in damp environments a whole lot easier. Also I vacuum seal three books of matches I carry. Vacuum sealed they are safe to carry, no oxygen no fire, and are fresh as the day you sealed them. |
This is the one that I carry.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-20...light/13848694 For $25 - its a great light. I have another light I use to go in and out from my stand when it is too dark. That one has some sort of opaque comver over the led making it look like one big bulb. But I like it because it isn't too bright and has red and blue snap on covers. I use the red cover and it gives me just enough light. But this post is getting to invilved for MLing so I am going to start a new one as a sticky. |
I've got a backup, a backup for my backup, batteries and a flasher... :)
Spent part of a night trying to find a deer a buddy left in the woods...He had found the deer but came out without marking... I carry 2 headlights, a flashlight, a flasher and batteries for all...The second headlight is to put on if the first either breaks or I need to change batteries...I've also left it on a limb to help me find my way out when tracking a deer...The flasher is used to clip on a limb over a deer so I can find it when I come back with help or the 4-wheeler....I've also clipped it to my tree stand to help when looking for a blood trail to help me find where the deer was last seen or was at the shot... I also carry 2 compasses and 3 knives.... :) Gonna start carrying my Glock 23 this year...I'm hearing too many stories about 2 legged creatures in the woods around here... :) |
I still use the stylus with a green light while walking in to my stand. the single led doesnt seem to alert much game. I use a UK flashlight as my backup. Xenon bulb in the UK and super bright. I bought my wife a Fenix 200 lumen tactical flashlight; its blinding to say the least. I always have 2 flashlights in my fanny pack while hunting.
|
I also carry at least 2 small LED lights. One is a 5 led that runs in 3 AAA's and the other is one of those little ones that clips on your hat bill and uses 2 of the 2032 coin type batteries. Both of them were cheap too, yet I've never had any issues with them like I have with other cheap lights. I also have an energizer led headlamp that uses the coin batteries. They take up hardly any room in my hip pack and run for several hours on one set of batteries. The coleman light sounds nice. I may have to check them out as well.
