My CVA ACCURA Is Throwing Shots..HELP
CVA Accura
.50 cal 100 grains tripple seven pellets (2) 250 g Barnes T EZ Bullet 209 preimer Nikon Omega BDC 250 (cleaning gun in between every shot) Put This Gun Away At The End of the season last year shooting a 50 cent piece at 100 yds. Bought a caldwell lead sled dft this season too fine tune at 200yds and i started shooting where i left off at (100yds) First 3 shots off the sled were a inch off center (50 cent piece)...Next 4 shots 6 inches too the left...from there on i moved the windage adjustment 24 clicks too the rite at 1/4" per click...which then shot 1" right of the bullseye....From their on out i played with it back too the left and ended up back too where i was at (24 clicks to the rite of where i started) Note all shots were on a paper plate at 100 yds...butt this is unnacceptable for both me and the gun coming off a steady rest! This Just Kinda baffles me on why it would be so off...i take care of this gun and dont bang it around! Ive noticed the barnes T EZ getting a little easier too pack....Is the gun loosening up? Switch too the tighter MZ? thanks for replys!!! |
The lead sled could easily break your Nikon scope. I would try another scope and see. You could also have plastic build up in the barrel. Flush and clean the barrel with boiling water will get rid of the plastic build up.
|
Lead sled DID NOT have no weight on it!!! At the end of the day i brushed the barrel with boiling water! also talked to nikon....Great Knowing it has a lifetime warranty!.
First time shooting off the lead sled...i like it...butt did alotta of research when i bought it and not too many had problems with it????? |
That would be my first guess as well that the lead sled trashed your scope.
|
I would put my money on a very slightly loose scope base screw.
|
Snugged Everything up...the rings were a touch loose! gonna go back out this weekend with the lead sled!!!!....I guess i dont quite understand how the shooting rest would BREAK the scope?????
|
I had posted my opinion before I saw that the leadsled had no weight. If you found a loose ring you probably have found the culprit. Good Luck this weekend.
|
If you didn't also check the base screws you should do so. If the rings were loose the base screws probably are also. The only way to know is to put a screwdriver or allen wrench to them. You can not detect a loose base screw by trying to move the base with your fingers.

The energy from shooting a firearm has to go somewhere. Normally your shoulder/body absorbs this recoil. The LS doesn't absorb any recoil and it is transferred back into the weapon. And apparently your scope suffered the consequences. If it were my rifle I would discontinue using the LS and count your blessings that using it didn't damage (crack) your buttstock. (check for cracks where it meets the receiver on top and bottom). If your rifle acts up this weekend without the LS you'd be wise to take the scope off and send it back to Nikon for repair or replacement. |
UGGGGGHHHH....Appreciate the Replys....Hopefully I just didnt waste 200 Bucks!!!!
|
I had a Bushnell Elite 3200 scope loose zero between sighting in on a lead sled and opening weekend the next week. I found out the hard way and completely missed a 10pt and shot extremely low on a doe.
Sent the scope back to Bushnell and they said the reticle had to be re-centered. That was the last time using the lead sled. |
Put me in the Lead Sled mistake club.
My buddy bought one. I put my 7MM Weatherby on it with 50 lbs of weight. After I chased my POI around and wasted a bunch of rounds. I found out it ripped my steel rings and bases apart. The scope was never the same and it cost $75 to replace the hardware. Never again for me and my guns with or without weight. |
Thanks for the info on the LS. I just bought a new rifle, scope setup and was getting ready to sight it in using a lead sled I was about to buy. I'll save my money and my new rig.
|
I never have understood folks using something like the leadsled, if the dang gun kicks that much, it's too much!!!
How are you supposed to get use to a gun by having something cradle it while you shoot?? |
Put me in the Lead Sled mistake club. Among my guns there is only one rifle whose recoil i consider severe: That gun is a 6.5 pound lightened Thai Mauser in .375 Alaskan (.348 Winchester case blown out and necked up). In terms of recoil; think a heavy load in a light .375 H&H magnum. |
Nchawkey
Its not that i cant take the kick of the gun been shooting it for years...I just bought the LS too try and dial the gun in at 200 ~ 300 yds ...having a steady rest. Just Got off the phone with nikon and caldwell and they have had no issues with the scopes or the rest. I guess if their trashing guns and scopes you would think somebody would speak up and they would have a recall on this Lead Sled Dft. Im Not Calling Anyone of You Liars, If I Have too ill find out the hard way, I may already have. I appreciate the info and advice i have received off this post. If in fact i determine the LS Trashed My scope....ILL BE SURE TOO BE THE GUY TOO SPEAK UP |
You're going to take a 300 yd shot with a ML?

I am. Why not?

He wouldn't like my answer, so no comment.

The question is, is the LS the culprit, or did the screws just come loose? I use blue locktite on all my scope installations. Never had a screw come loose. Not saying I don't have a loose one!
|
Will Find Out this weekend ill be sure too let yall Know!!!!...As far as 200 - 300 yds?? never shot 300....dropped a nice whitetail at 200 though....Again thats why i bought the LS too test and tune with different load conbinations..either way im not out nothing Nikon will stand behind there scope and caldwell will give me my money back if im not happy!!! Theres gotta be someone out there thats Happy with the lead sled...Its Still on the market!!!!!!

200 yds is reasonable. I'm setting up my MR to do the same, but i'd prefer to get much closer.
|
I sight all of my guns in with the regular lead sled and haven't had any problems. I don't use any weight to allow the sled to slide backwards on the shot. It doesnt need weight to hold the gun steady. Good luck, I hope it was just some loose screws.

I prefer shots at 100yds and under, I wont bash anyone who shoots at whatever distance they want, they have to live with the outcome and sleepless nights waiting for it to get light to pick back up on the sign. But if the person practices at 300yds all the time and can put EVERY shot at 300 in a 4" circle and get the wind right EVERY time, then your the Man! On the topic of the lead sled, I dont have one and cant comment, I use a pillow on a bench, then switch to shooting off just the bench, it's more like real life shooting. (BP) |
Also I use a 240gr XTP in My Accura, it loves them, I never get a flyer. All My CVA's shoot the 240gr XTP's great.

200yds is my max also. I practice shoot a-lot at 200 and have taken a handful of deer from 180-200yds. And they have to be relaxed and or feeding or standing still.

(BP) It's fun to practice long shots, but I never use that practice during a hunt. I just love to get close, and get no satisfaction from long shots. That's just me though. I'm not pushing my style on anybody. |
