I want to check out some state hunting land this year during black powder season, so to avoid getting lost in the woods I picked this up. Anyone seen one before. One of the state forests is around 10,000 acres, I think.

I was looking at those a month or two back, along with the Bushnell Back Track. The reviews on both were mixed - some real good, some pretty bad. That's not unusual. But both items had more bad reviews than I thought normal. Anyway, I didn't get one. Don't need it for hunting in my area. But a good one at that price would sure be nice when heading out into the marsh by boat.

The price of a decent GPS is cheap compared to the price of getting lost and God knows what else - especially in bad weather. But you should always carry a topo map of the area and a good compass. Sometimes GPS units crash.

I use a Magellan GPS when I hunt or go out on a lake. That way I can mark the dock on a large lake and if I don't get in before dark, the GPS will lead me back to the dock. In the woods my GPS is kind of hard to get to work. With the leaf cover over head, plus for a true reading you have to be walking 2mph.. sometimes that just is not possible. But with a compass I can set the north on the GPS and then walk in from there by taking a trail marker reading.

Yes, I do, and even got permission to put it up from the forest service.

You're not talking to some redneck.
