Which one would you pick?
I currently have a Remington model 700ml .54 caliber, stainless barrel and 24 in barrel. My buddy wants to trade me his new t/c impact 50cal blued barrel with a camo stock...the Remington is in mint condition and has been only shot like 10 times and also has the cabelas conversion kit in it .
Just wondering if I should keep the Remington or trade it? |
I would keep the Remington. It's worth a whole lot more. So if I was going to trade I would sure want some cash or something else to sweeten the pot. My vote is keep the remington

+1 on the Remington. Ron

keep the remington you can always convert it to smokeless and keep shooting black powder or smokeless powder the remington is worth more $
|
Keep the Remington.

Ok thanks just wondering cause I heard it was hard to find bullets for it because it is a 54 cal.

I would say a Speer .452-300 grain deep curl but they are really hard to find right now. I am not much of a Hornady fan because they can separate copper from lead on ocasion. Sierra also makes a good .4515-300 grain bullets. Then if you want to go to a preimium bullet, Barnes offers a bunch and Knight offers a .452-250 grain Bloodline that could really be awesome. I use a .458-275 grain Bloodline but there is not a sabot made for 458 to 54. One other option which would be a bone crusher... there is a 50x54 sabot available that would allow you to shoot 50 cal Deep Curls... man talk about a dead animal... |
MMP 54x50 sabot with any of these
50cal DC 300 or 325gr. The 325gr is the bullet Knight shipped with their 54cals. 50cal Hornady 300gr FTX. These expand best at higher velocity and shoot flatter than most 50cals. 458s might work in the Harvest 54x45 sabot made for .452s. They work in mine but do load tight. |
im fairly new with muzzleloading so would you be able to explain what some of this means....like why would you want to use a sabot with a diameter of .458 to use in a .54 caliber gun.

458 bullets in a Harvester 54x451 sabot

Nobody makes a sabot for a .458 bullet (a 45-70 rifle bullet) that is designed togo into a 54 cal gun. Often if you use and undersized sabot like Scott is suggesting a .451/.452 x 54 sabot loaded with a .458 bullet you can make it work in some guns. Maybe down the road try the combination, but right now I would save yourself the expense of buying .458 bullets and possible not being able to use them. I think you have a good selection of .452 and .500 bullets that you might make the choice from. |
A few easy combos that you will not have to mix and match sabots / bullets. Once you get more familiar then its pretty easy to mix and match.

A lot of people use and like Dead Center's - I just do not like an all lead bullet... There is a reason that hunters moved away from all lead bullet to copper lead bullets, then all copper, and now all brass. For the price of a Dead Center - i would buy a preimium bullet like the Barnes or the Bloodlines. Might go over and look at this thread... there are a lot of different thoughts expressed there. http://hunting-washington.com/smf/in...c,77194.0.html |
Ok thank you..I now understand the sabot and bullet situation ..has any one had a sabot they thought was the best?

Yeah I was going to use one of them..also it might be a dumb question but how do you use conical bullets?
|
Also where do you find the projectiles for the muzzleloader...

Personally, i didn't buy a 54cal to shoot 45cal bullets when i can easily shoot 50cal 300gr-385gr bullets just as well or better. They will always make a 1/2 inch hole at least once. :D |
