I wouldn't bother. They should expand on elk if you use pure lead.

You want to get good penetration too.

Once again, after shooting many whitetails with a store bought 370 grain Maxiball, I never lost one. Most dropped in their tracks and the few that went anywhere did not go far and left a blood trail a blind man could follow. That's pushing them with 83 grains of fff Goex at up to 80 yards max with open sights. I should think, but I'm not positive, that they should perform equally as well on elk. I don't think I would risk throwing the bullet out of balance with a poorly drilled hollow point.
