Traditions

I noticed on the tradition webpage that their 2012 lineup the Vortex will have a 30in barrel on it. What are your thought's on this ...good/bad..?......Not a gun i would carry around in the thick stuff, but may be useful shooting across fields i guess.

Muley Hunter 02-20-2012 10:12 AM

I don't see the need for a long barrel with a fast twist. Don't they say why the long barrel?

frontstuffer01 02-20-2012 10:15 AM

they didn't say what the reason was,....i'm kinda interested to know myself..

frontstuffer01 02-20-2012 10:19 AM

Just checked out their website again......they are saying that the 30in barrel will improve your accuracy with better velocities for those longer shots......i'm not buying that story......

Muley Hunter 02-20-2012 10:26 AM

The .270 I just sold had a 22" barrel, and would kill at 700yds.

I'm not buying it either. Just how far do they want a ML to shoot?

Tradition always seems to be looking for gimmicks.

frontstuffer01 02-20-2012 10:33 AM

Agreed!!.......

MountainDevil54 02-20-2012 10:45 AM

longer barrel means your powder will have more time to complete its burn.

Muley Hunter 02-20-2012 10:48 AM

Subs do fine in 28" barrels. Anybody using real black in an inline?

frontstuffer01 02-20-2012 10:58 AM

guess it your using 150grs of pyrodex or related longer barrel may help, but the average person isn't shooting that much for accuracy.Guess cva or t/c will be coming out with a longer barrel now. say 32-34ins.........so how long of a barrel is TO long?

Muley Hunter 02-20-2012 11:02 AM

Some have 42"-44" barrels. They still waste 1/2 the real black powder as unburnt.

Doubt that happens with the subs. Especially BH 209.

frontstuffer01 02-20-2012 11:06 AM

Muley, who makes a inline with a 42-44 i barrel?.....or did i read you post wrong...

MountainDevil54 02-20-2012 11:08 AM

considering how most of these new breech plugs are 2" long, they are just adding some extra barrel to give you a full 28"s

Muley Hunter 02-20-2012 11:08 AM

FS,

Nobody. I thought we were talking about all muzzleloaders.

Somebody forgot to tell CVA. The MR is 25". Do you think it will be less accurate?

It's a gimmick Jon.

MountainDevil54 02-20-2012 11:15 AM

MR is meant to be built small and light weight.

frontstuffer01 02-20-2012 11:19 AM

My mistake Muley,.....i was referring to the modern inline...guess i need to slow down abit when i'm at work .

I know, but you didn't answer the question. Will it be less accurate than the V2? Is the Optima less accurate than the V2. Do you think a 30" V2 will be more accurate than the 28"?

Stop being Mr Obvious. :p

My traditions Pennsylvania rifle is 57 inches long. I bet the barrel is 42 or so. I need to measure it.

ok I measured. It is a little over 40 inches. Of course it's not an inline

I shoot real black powder in my inlines. And then some days the wild hair pops up and I shoot sub powders. All depends on my mood.

The advantage of the 30 inch barrel is a more complete burn of powder with magnum loads. Although I believe a 28 or even a 26 inch barrel will do the same. It would be a long devil to carry around but I am sure you'd get used to it.

Although its probably another gimmick to catch the unsuspecting muzzleloader shooter in to thinking they have bigger and better.

I shot Swiss in my inlines too, but I don't think we're normal. :)
