the 44-240 XTP is not a mag... If you are looking for a mag look at the nose of the bullet and the copper jacket will roll over the nose and down into the HP. |

Exactly right.
Well, it used to be that way. However, the last 240 grain .452 bullets i bought do not have the nose rolled into the hollow point. The nose is rolled over a little but the gilding metal does not extend into the hollow point like it did on the older bullets. At first i thought mine were the 250 grain .452 bullets, then i weighed a couple. (BP) |

No problem, I buy and use the same bullet/sabot combination and I buy them the same way, in the Thompson Center 30 pack. They are an excellent performer both on paper and on deer. And the cost per bullet/sabot is hard to beat. I don't worry or care if they are plain XTP's or Mag's because they have always done the job that I wanted them to do.
All my buddy's that shoot a MLer also use the same bullett and have the same results, but all my buddys shoot TC's. All I can say is if there's anyone who has never tried this bullett to try them out. They preform excellent on deer and on paper. On a good day I can get 1"+- groups at 100yds and 2" or less groups at 200yds with them. My best group to date at 200yds with a 5 shot group is 1 1/2" it would have been better but I always manage to let the last bullett get away from me and be a tad out of the group, I think it's because Im trying too hard for that (best group) (BP) |
falcon, does it look like the 240gr .452 45cal XTP Mag that I posted a pic of above further back in this post? |
I first tried the 240 grain XTP's with sabots in the combination package many years ago in the first inline I ever bought, a Brolin Arms, Legacy Model .50 caliber plunger style # 11 cap rifle. I tried round ball and Maxi Balls and couldn't get them to shoot. So, for the first time ever I tried some bullets with sabots and those were the ones I happened to stumble upon and buy. They wound up shooting well out of that rifle, which to this day I don't know the twist rate of. I think I'll go see if I can determine it a little later. They performed so well I just kept using them in all my inline rifles with terrific results. I have even found them to shoot well out of a .54 caliber, 24 inch, 1 in 48 inch twist barrel using the Thompson Center .54/.45 caliber orange Mag Express sabot. Here's a target I've shown before. It is a 2 shot group that I didn't want to mess up with a third shot.

I just checked the twist rate of the Legacy and got one half of a twist of the ram rod in 15 inches. So It must be a 1 in 30 inch twist barrel that is 21.5 inches long. I really want to get the old girl to the range one day. She's never had a range trip. Just some off hand, in a field, sighting in.

I'm not sure I measured that barrel length properly. The length measurement was taken from the inside of the barrel end of the breech plug to the muzzle end of the barrel.

here's another target shot with the same rifle but shooting a .44/.430 caliber, 240 grain XTP in a .54 caliber white MMP sabot. If it wasn't for the 2 fliers, even I would have been impressed.

Sometimes I take the third shot and end up with a great three-shot group and a big smile on my face. Othertimes, well, I take the third shot and end up talking to myself.....:eek2: |
