Gas checks

Anybody ever tried the lead conicals with gas checks on the base. They are used in cartridge guns. I wonder how the gas check would affect accuracy. I was wondering if there would be some benefit if using hot loads, kinda like putting a wad over the powder. Just a thought

I have never tried a gas check. But others have. I have shot a wad under the conical and I really saw little difference out of my White. If you have some, I would sure give them a try. Then let us know how they do.

I have a few on the shelf that a fellow dwb sent me to try out. I'll let you know when I get a chance to shoot them. He said he wasn't getting the best accuracy with them himself. One thing about them is they need to be sized just right or loading will be pretty tough.
I use the wads some of the time especially if I am using a hotter powder like 777 with conicals. I do it more to prevent leading than for any other reason.

Gas checks are used to protect the bases of cast bullets from hot gases. Bullet speed should be over 1000 fps or they can dislodge and act like a barrel obstruction. They may help but the obturation of the lead base helps seal powder gases. I don't believe you will gain anything.
