Let's see those kills from days gone by!!

Here is a pic I ran across I thought you might like to see. My brother(one on the right) and I got drew out back in 2008 for a primative weapon hunt in Missouri. We put in for this hunt for about 9 years before we drew out. We both tagged out the first morning of a two day hunt. We were both using Knight Disc rifles in the .50 cal. His was blued and synthetic and my was stainless/synthetic. Talk about a great hunt. Both of these bucks scored almost the exact same. At any rate post up some pics of some kills with the muzzleloader. Should be a good post and a chance to share.

bronko22000 12-19-2011 06:02 PM

Wow, those are 2 bruisers. Most of my ML kills have been baldies as I usually shoot my buck during archery season and here in PA we can only shoot 1 buck a year.

My first. In fact, this was the first live deer I had ever seen in my home county - and being just that kind of guy... I shot it. I was 14 rather than the 16 the local newspaper had printed (I think they were trying to help me buy beer early ;) ). I still have a copy of that old yellowed newspaper. Also happened to be the first legally taken deer in that county since the early 1900s.

My Best MLer Buck to date..........
(BP)

Underclocked 12-19-2011 07:12 PM

26 years later, 1980, I took this one about 30 miles in the neighboring county west of that first one. He remains my best buck to this day.

155 5/8 B&C.

Underclocked 12-19-2011 07:16 PM

Breechplug, you have me bested with the m/l and there is no doubt that onetohunt and his brother did the same (where EXACTLY was that, onetohunt?) but this is probably my best buck to date with a muzzleloader

You can see, the picture is not terribly old. Fall of 09.

Sorry, the first two bucks I pictured were not taken with a muzzleloader. The first was taken with a very old Marlin 30-30 that failed to strike the primer hard enough to ignite for the first three shot attempts on that buck. The fourth went off. Pretty good composure for a kid. :) The second was taken with that buck at MAXIMUM speed through heavy timber with a .270 Winchester... heart shot.

Semisane 12-19-2011 10:00 PM

My flintlock buck doesn't compare to those bruisers. But I'm mighty proud of him anyway.

But this is my favorite harvest picture.

This is my best ML buck to date. I shot him back in 2000 with my White rifle. He was a little over 100 yards out in a grown up field. He has a 18 inch spread and 8pts.

gregrn43 12-20-2011 05:25 AM

Semi, that doe is really dark colored on the head and neck area. Is that common down there?

Semisane 12-20-2011 06:36 AM

Not real common Greg. But we do get one like that every now and then.

For the last three years we've been seeing an old doe we call "Granny". She has a gray snout with a 3" white spot on the center of her head, and is gray along her neck and shoulders. She looks really old, but still has twins with her every year.

onetohunt 12-20-2011 07:05 AM

Great pics and stories keep them coming!!

Unfortunately I don't have any pics of deer from the first few years I using a muzzy. It's only been in the past 4 years or so that I started carrying a camera with me and trying to document everything. But here's a few:

From maybe 3 years ago- buck that had dropped its antlers prematurely. Hit him on the run (I was in a treestand, a buddy was doing a mini-drive for me). Hit him a little far back in the liver, but he only went about 70 yards after the hit. Load was .40 cal 200 XTP with 95 grains T7. Here's the bullet recovered off the far side hide:

Year after that was a doe in a snowstorm:

Also on a drive- I was posting. Best drive I've ever seen- when my 2 buddies went through the bedding area they must have busted 25 deer out of there all running in different directions. This one ran right towards me and a I took a quartering-to shot at about 50 yards. It was a high shoulder/spine hit and she dropped on the spot. Load was the same as the first deer.

Earlier that year my dad used my muzzy to take a buck that had been wounded. He was in his stand and saw a buck coming by that had had its front leg shot all the way off (probably by our drunk neighbors) so he put it down from 25 yards out.

Load was the same as the previous 2 deer, and here is the bullet recovered:

Made me want to switch to a different bullet/load combo for the next year, even though the buck was taken cleanly. Last year was the best year so far muzzy hunting for me.

First day of the season, I was up in the tree for all of 30 minutes before this 10 pointer walked right up to me. I put a 185 Lehigh on top of 80 grains T7 right though him- he hopped about 20 yards and fell over right under my stand. After tagging him, I decided to get back up in the tree. So about 45 min later this nice doe comes along and presents with a 40 yard broadside shot. I had reloaded with a 200 Shockwave, so I put that through both of her lungs and she also stumbled just about 20 yards before falling over.

This year I got a button buck in gun season (with a muzzy) and am looking forward to late muzzleloader season in Jan!

My most intrepid little hunter, with my best deer. Taken with a Lyman Trade Rifle, 54 caplock, LEE R.E.A.L.

Those were the days. She has other interests these days (boys, clothes, shoes, etc)

awesome, I know what you mean, my little ladies in my life have different likes than what they once did. Oh well, I still have the memories!!

WV Hunter 12-20-2011 09:16 AM

My biggest m/l buck happened to come last year...decent 9pt. I have some other good pics of older kills, but nothing is digital. Someday I'll get a scanner I guess.

Here's the one with my little honey too...not looking forward to the days when I ain't so important.
Its already creeping up on me.

I'm loving this thread. Unfortunately where I hunt is pretty far out so I never seem to have anybody around to take a pic of me with my deer. I've only killed two bucks with a muzzleloader, and both are the biggest I've killed yet. Not near as nice as what I've seen on here but maybe someday.

dirt1008 12-20-2011 12:38 PM

Sorry about the pictures it's my first time posting pics and they seem to have ended up a little large. Kinda bums me out after all of this thinking I don't have any pics of me with me my deer. Just got one of me and my turkey last year.

ok here's a pile of deer from 1997--I'm guy wearing the USAF field jacket on the right.

Really nice pics. To the fellers with the little hunting gals. My daughter started hunting with me when she was 12. She took a break through her late teens, but picked it back up just before she got married. This past year she bought her own rifle, (she always used one of mine). Now she lives 4hrs away, but always comes back to hunt opening weekend with me and her mom.

nice buck there in the back of that tan pickup!

onetohunt 12-23-2011 02:47 PM

nothing quite like that Texas hunting either.

BigDaddy12t 12-23-2011 04:30 PM

Not a ml'er kill, got him with the 870.

BigDaddy12t 12-23-2011 04:35 PM

Another one.

Here is a doe I got the same year with my bow. The buck was actually taken with the 870, but it was taken on the last day of the gun season, and I didnt find him until the next day while bow hunting.

BigDaddy12t 12-23-2011 04:39 PM

My first ml'er harvest.

BigDaddy12t 12-23-2011 04:43 PM

My one and only buck with the ml'er.

rafsob 12-23-2011 05:23 PM

My first ML'er in Virginia:

This guy weighed in at 206 lbs. wet. And this is a large deer for Virginia. He was a running shot in an open field I was sitting on at the edge. He was in full rut. You can see this in his huge neck.

A couple of my favorite hunts.

My first ever buck in 2001 & my first muzzleloader hunt,

Sept 2011 mule deer hunt which i got skunked but got some nice grouse.

A lot of hunts with a lot of pictures and good memories. Most of the memories are about the things my family and i have done together, seen together, places we've gone together. I love to explore new areas and get pictures but sometimes that one picture you don't take, stays in your memory forever.

7.62NATO 01-13-2012 07:02 AM

This is from 2009, before I started BP hunting. Central VA public land, Marlin 512 Slugmaster using iron sights.

idahoron 01-13-2012 08:40 PM

If the gun cocks it's self it needs a new nipple. With that said Mine loaded with big conicals will go to half cock most of the time. I have to change nipples very regularly. Ron

Mr.Flintlock 01-17-2012 08:44 AM

Wild Hog

I shot this hog back in 2002 with a 58 caliber flintlock. I was shooting a PBR pushed by 90 gr of GOEX 2-f
