I do things the Easy Way, for Clean up (and I use Pyrodox RS and Pyrodox Pellets) Just a Little Dish Soap and Water. Get a Nylon Brush to Scrub the Bore, some Cleaning Patches and a Good MLer Oil like Montana Extreme Bore Conditioner for the Barrel, then some Breech Plug Grease and Your Good. Oh Assuming you get a Loading Jag and a Cleaning Jag with your MLer, they usually come with them.
Some poeple like to use a (Short Starter) to start the Sabot or Conical down the Bore befor you use the Ram Rod. You usually pay more for all the extra stuff included with the Starter Kit, and they usually throw in Sabots and Bullets that THEY like to push for you to use with the MLer, there Not always the Best Choice, ask around and you'll get many different answers as to what are the Best Bullets, Sabots, Conicals to use in your particular MLer, have you made a decesion on to what one you have been considering?
For a Beginner I would suggest using Pyrodox Pellets, 2-50gr Pellets is pleanty enough to do the Job out to 175yds+, once you have it all down you can try Lose Powder to find that Sweet Load that Your MLer likes the Best along with whatever Bullet/Sabot Conical you chose. Im not one to be all concerned with Cleaning a MLer so I shoot Pyrodox, cleaning to me is Fun and I could care less about a little Fouling, it's all part of a MLer. But there are Lose Powders out there that require just Plain Water to Clean Up and have little Fouling.
MLing is not as hard as you may think, it's EASY, it only gets Hard when you think you have to have this and Buy that, then it gets Confusing. Just Buy one, Sight it in and Go Hunting.
Best of Luck to You!

That's why I said that's what I use and if you use Something else then you'd need to clean it a different way.
Dang, You Guy's have it Bad for Regulations...cant use this or that....I know we Dont have Mule Deer but we can use Sabots or whatever we want as long as our MLer is Loaded through the Muzzle, shoots a Single Projectile and has a Minimum Bore of .44 inch, plus we can use Scopes and any Powder. What is the Reasoning for Your Rules? Why cant You use Sabots and have to use Conicals? dont they Feel a Saboted Bullet will do the Job on a Muley? and why the you have to use this Powder and not that one, is one Powder Better than the other??? Just Wondering....

Colorado thinks they have a primitive season, but they allow BH 209, and inlines. Not my definition of primitive.

Colorado is mild.

No scopes
No Pellet powder
No smokeless powder
No Sabots

Use any sidelock, flintlock, inline you want so long as it fires loose powder, conicals and has open sights.

Why though? what's there Reasioning behind the Regs????
Our Late MLing Season used to be Patch and Round Ball Only, then they changed it. They allowed Scoped and Sabots, there Reasoning was that a Scope would make You a Better Shot thus Causing Less Bad Shots and Wounded Deer. The use of a saboted Bullet was much Better Effiecent than a Round Ball and would Provide a Cleaner more Humane Kill on the Animal. The Scope would also give the Older or Less Eye Sight Impared a Better Visual on there Target, thus resulting in a Better Sight Picture and a Better Harvest Rate vs Loss Rate.

Why even have a ML season? They're more effective than a 30-30 now. The original intention of a ML season has been lost for quite awhile.
