New to Black Powder

Hello,

I live and hunt in colorado. I have hunted with my bow and rifle most my life, but I have heard to many stories of people shooting elk/deer with a bow and loosing them. I have never shot a elk or dear with my bow. I love to hunt during that time of year and was thinking about getting a black powder rifle. I however know nothing about them. Can anyone give me an idea of a good idea for a first rifle? I was looking at cabaels and liked the TC dream season with a starter kit. Is that a good gun? are there better websites to get a rifle on?

Thanks,

Colorado = Conicals only.

Highly recommend the CVA Optima ' Non thumb hole' or the Accura V2. Even the Wolf is a heck of a gun for a super low price.

Hello and welcome. If you're an avid outdoor person you will fall in love with muzzleloader hunting/shooting as everyone in here has. And you have come to a great forum for information and also a bit of ribbing so I hope you have a little thick skin. Mountaineer is correct about handling the rilfes. You may also want to handle a couple CVA rifles too as well as Knights. I cannot give you too much advice on inlines as I prefer to hunt with sidelock (percussion and flintlock) rifles. But I suggest, if you are going to be using your ML for elk than you get a 50 cal minimum. And you will want to use a somewhat heavy bullet for them. I'd suggest something in the 300 gr range. Some guys use 250 gr bullets but IMO they are a bit light.
The inline shooters in here will be glad to help you out. We even have a few on here from CO. Good luck to you and stay here. IMO this is the best ML forum with the best guys around.

Chet, if it will shoot conicals and be able to use open sights, those are both fine recommendations.

Not true at all. My Colorado trip next year is with a saboted bullet and it's legal during rifle season.

Not sure what the regulations are in ML season.

If i had to use a conical i would buy a 1/24 twist ML. That would be either a White Rifle or a Savage. I'm pretty sure you can only use a 50cal or bigger ML on Elk in Colorado.

50cal minimum on elk for CO.

Not many use a muzzleloader during rifle season. The only fool i ever ran into that was using his muzzy during 3rd season bull hunt was me :D
