Default What' s up with my gun ?

Tried out some of them " TC" Cheap Shots sabots in my 1 in 48 barrel at 50 yards with open sight I got a group that would fit under a half dollar about the same as with round balls.

Now here' s the problem I shot it three times cleaned the barrel in between shots with cheap shots and got the group a above then I cleaned the barrel again and shot some patched round balls and my group with round balls went from 1 1/2 inches to 8 inches after I had shot the sabot. [:' (]

So I cleaned the barrel again tried another sabot and it hit bout 5 inches from where I was aiming, cleaned the barrel again and started to try another sabot and got it about 6 inches down the barrel and couldn' t get it down any farther down ended up having to pull it bout like not to have gotten it out. [:@]

Went home cleaned it up again went back out the next day tried it with some round balls and the same thing happen got about an 8 inch group so I cleaned the barrel started to try a sabot and couldn' t get it down past 6 inches either.

There' s no ruff spots in the barrel or anything that looks wrong so what do you all thanks the problem ?

Sounds like you might be having some plastic fouling problems. Try using a different type of sabot.Make sure your powder loads are consistant as well.A sabot bullet and a patched round ball will not hit in the same place. If your groups of round balls are close and your saboted bullet groups are close than I say you don' t have a problem.A stuck bullet can happen.

How hot was the temperature outdoors & how often did you shoot? That barrel needs to cool in-between shots during the summer months. Also, what were you using for cleaning at the range & what powder & what powder charge were you using??

Also, Cheap Shot bullets come with Cheap Sabots. Buy some MMP plastic sabots or ones that say " magnum use & easy loading" . Speaking of ' good & cheap" , Windex window cleaner is a good fouling reducer & the " Traditions" line of plastic sabots work well & are cheap also.

Another thing! Those Cheap Shot bullets fragment alot upon impact of an animal. You don' t want to be eating that lead. Thompson recommends you only practice with those bullets... then switch to their same sized/same trajectory 240 grain XTP sabot/bullet to hunt with.

Didn' t fugue I' d have very much plastic fouling after three shots ? what type of cleaners good to get rid of it ?

Was using 90 gr. of pyrodex for the sabots and 85 for the round balls.

The first three sabots were hitting right in line but two inches lower then the round balls,
But after shooting the first three sabots the round ball were going ever where, and in you could not covering up there holes with a half dollar any more you would have to use a paper plate they had spread out so much.

I found first three sabots and they were intact but the sabot from the fourth shot had two of them fin' s off.

Temperature well it was HOT and I would shoot then walk the 50 yards down range then back load and shoot again.
And I was using cleaning patches soaked in Hope' s 9 plus in between every shot with the sabots and every other on the round balls.

Theses were the Cheap shots from last year picked them up for a buck and a half after season last year but I was looking at them this year and seen that they had different sabots then they had last year. which was the bad sabot' s this years or last or both ?

Some advocate the use of Chore Boy copper pot scrubbers to remove lead fouling. Apparently you just tear off a hunk and run it up and down a couple of times. Seems to me that would also remove any plastic fouling. CVA makes a product especially for sabot plastic removal called Advanced Sabot Shooters Solvent.

Others would have more experience with this problem and could offer perhaps better alternatives.

Are you using that Hoppes Plus as a patch lube for your roundball shots and using it as a range bore cleaner?

It' s difficult to sight-in in hot weather because cool weather will throw a monkey-wrench in someone' s good hot weather groupings. Next time out, try Windex to swab the bore between shots. Too much lube in a hot barrel will give you erratic groupings. Also, Wally World sell Outer Nitro Solvent in a spray can for $3.99. When you take the rifle home,. use that with a bore brush for final cleaning after the Hoppes -- then a good gun oil for storage.

Sorry you are having trouble. But my question is if you were getting nice, satisfying groups with roundballs, why did you try something new at all? I just counted it up and I' ve had my Remington 700 ML for 6 years now and I' ve shot it a total of 9 times. The first shot out of the box was a dead on bullseye at 50 yards. I shot it the second time to make sure it wasnt a fluke. I put it away after that and the only shots I' ve taken with it since have been one practice shot each season to make sure the sights are still on, or to take a deer. I dont believe in messing with a good thing...
Good luck to you.

Scrider1, no offense but do you not enjoy shooting your gun? Are you limiting your max range to 50 yards, or would you like to know what your bullet is doing at 100 or 125 yards? Your barrel isn' t even broken in yet. I for one like to tinker with different loads and bullets to see how they work in my gun. That' s part of the fun of muzzleloading for me. You CAN change up everything if you want. I like to try a different bullet every year at the range, and this year I' ve tried 2 different powders also. All I can say is to each his own.

Carcano, it sounds to me like you are getting a plastic fouling buildup in your barrel. I don' t shoot sabot, but that' s one of the drawbacks to using them. Some people I' ve shot with have to clean after every 1 or 2 shots to get their best groups with sabots. Make sure you have a good nylon bristled brush and some plastic solvent, and scrub the barrel good when cleaning. Then, take it back out and compare groups. I' ll bet they tighten back up after thorough cleaning. Good luck.

Triple 7, I was using Hoppes plus as the cleaner but I was using Hodgdon' s Spit Patch for patch lube.

I' m guess I' m going to have to make a trip to find some Plastic remover scene the local Wally world don' t have anything when I pick some up and it gets a little cooler " hopefully this month" I' ll get back out to the range and shoot some more I' ll let you all know how it goes.

[:-] By the way I lucked out and got two can' s of triple seven for 7,50 a can only thing I can figure out is it was left over from last year and they forgot to mark it back up. Anyway I was wondering if anyone had any tip' s on using this stuff ?

Not sure what to tell you about that. I shoot a Knight and shoot Knight sabots w/pyrodex, and I have never had a problem with plastic fouling. When I shoot my gun at the range, I usually spit on a patch and run it through every 3 shots or so. I' ve shot it as many as a dozen times without cleaning, and never any problems, but I usually swab it out as it makes it easier to load. Accuracy is always the same...dead on.

Maybe it is the sabots you are shooting?? Maybe the powder??? Maybe some sort of mysterious combo of those and the heat??? Who knows, but whatever it is I hope you get it figured out. That would drive me crazy.
