Default bro in law is driving me NUTS

He sighted in my nephews .243 Scout on Wednesday afternoon for the Thursday thanksgiving day hunt. My nephew pulls the trigger, BANG! Right over his back.

Oh this fudgin gun aint holding on track! Blah blah blah. After i gave him an ear full and told him you CAN'T sight in a gun and then just hand it over to someone else and say its dead on, because it won't be! Ohhhh no no, Yes you can! The scopes Parallex allows you to do it out to 100 yards and it will still be the same.

So we get home,i throw the lead sled in the truck and head over to the NRA by myself with the gun, set up a 100 yard target, Boom! 7-8" high but dead center. Reload and take another shot, 3/4" group.

He has 20-20 vision in his scope eye, my nephew and i both wear glasses and still have trouble seeing. He just doesn't get that different eye sight is going to cause the scope to be off!

PO'd me that he did the sight in and didn't let my nephew take any shots to make sure it was actually on for him!

Easy enough to say that once the gun was on sight i packed up and headed home rather than aggravate myself more than i need to.

And to top it off! Yes it gets WORSE. We're in the field hunting and my 16yo nephew brough some hearing muffs to wear when hes shooting because his ears are sensitive. Bobby! What are you doing with those? You're a man! Those will just get in your way. Its unethical to wear those because you can't hear what anyone is saying to you!

Yeah? Kinda like the pot calling the kettle black especially when it comes to sighting in a scope for THAT persons eyes rather than, "the scopes parralex will let any shooter be on no matter what".

Sorry boys, had to vent BIG time. I can't stand hard heads like this guy who preaches crap he doesn't know anything about.

Hes taking my nephew out and letting him borrow his .270 which isn't sighted in for his eyes either.

I've got a friend that always wants me to take a couple shots with his rifle after he sights in then worries because my shot(s) aren't right in his group.

Sorry MD, I was'nt Thinking
Now I really Hate to Admit when Im wrong, dont think I have ever anyway.....but is it the Truth about what your saying about you cant sight in someone elses Gun aith a Scope on it and have it be on for them???? How about the other way where they sight it in and it's on for you???
If this is the case I Never knew this, but Im not sold on it. I dont wear Glasses or Contacs, My Wife Connie does, I Always sight in Her Guns with Scopes for Her then let Her take a few shots so she does'nt get a sore arm and there Always right on for Her when She shoots.
A week befor Opening Day a couple of us were out sighting in our Guns for Opening Day, this year is the first year ever that we can use a Rifle in NY in our County. My Buddy let Me shoot His Browing (Scoped) 30-06 I put a 1/2" group with it at 100yds, He already had it sighted in preveously, it was dead on for Me. He then let His Nephew shoot it, He also put a group on the Target as good as mine, He wear Glasses, My Buddy and I dont. All three of us shot the Rifle with the exact same results.
Know Im known to be good with adjusting and setting up New Scopes. My Buddies always let Me get them on and sighted in, then they shoot them. They can do it but I can take 1 shot on a new scope and then adjust it and with in 2 more shots I can have it in the Bull, so Im a little faster and just seem to have a knack for doing it.
Now after I sight in there Scopes I have Never had any of them be as far off as you described above, I dont think I ever once had to change a setting on the Scope for them after I sighted it in.
I sight it in, shoot it and Im dead on, they shoot it and there dead on......what's the Verdict on this???? Im also Taller than any of My Friends, Im 6'6" and have Long Arms, I think My Tallest Friend is around 6'2" and the rest are between 5'10 and 6', some wear Contacs and some dont.

My BIL sights in his sons rifle every year for him. BIL is 65, wears glasses and shoots right handed. His son is 42, has 20-20 vision and shoots left handed. The rifle is always on for him after his dad sights it in. I don't think your theory holds water in this case.

There is often more to the problem than eyes & scope.

The caliber/load/recoil combination and the shooter's hold and ability to deal with recoil is also a factor. If the sighter was letting the gun drive straight back (sort of rolling with the punch) and the shooter was bracing for the recoil letting the muzzle jump it could account for the hits being high.

And as for eyes, I can sight a rifle with iron sights (not f/o) and my son's groups will be high/left of mine every time. I can sight one with a scope or f/o sights and his group will be much closer.
I can sight a "springer" air rifle with a scope and his groups will not be close to mine.

Eyes, the gun's sights and performance, the shooter's hold, and probably many other factors all enter into the equation!

It's always wise to check where YOU are hitting with the gun YOU are going to hunt with!

BP I am with you on this one. My hinting buddies, their dads and mine all shoot each others guns with close to same POI. We are all different sizes and shapes ages glasses no glasses. I am not sure what the issue is MD, but we have never experienced what you are describing.

I have to agree with both MD and BP on this. I work with weapons for a living and have had several of our shooters come into the armory and I do work of various nature for their weapons then I laser bore sight it in, then take them to the range for target time.
I have sighted in my own weapons since I have been able to and was so instructed by my father growing up. I willnever had someone a weapon and say its dead nuts on for I know its not till THEY paper it. I used to have some BIL's that came to my farm prior to deer season to "Sight their guns in". I got my sand bags out (before lead sled days) on my concrete bench and all they did was use the bench for a table.
They were making scope adjustments from what they saw their impacts were from shooting OFFHAND!!!!!!! No rest, no sticks, nothing. I ask how. Their reply, "well, there are no concrete benches in the timber"!!!! I just walk away and was thankful they were not hunting my land. So over the 40+yrs I have been shooting for recreation and work, I have seen enough to say that the professionals are correct in sight in your own stuff and test it on paper before aloowing it to be claimed as correct.
