Just finished up the 100gr Pyrodex Pellets VS 100gr Pyrodex RS test some were wanted to see.
I am going to try 150gr Pyrodex Pellets and 150gr Loose RS just here in a bit and then will post the results.

Ok and for the record, the bore was fully cleaned in between shots.
Winchester W209 primers as well.
100gr Loose Pyrodex RS 1,743 FPS
100gr Pellets Pyrodex 1,778 FPS
150gr Loose Pyrodex RS 2,041 FPS
150gr Pellets Pyrodex 2,092 FPS
I was very surprised at the outcome this evening.
So as for a certain gun writers "Pellets are for dummies" article, i'd have to say.... Who's the dummy now.

MD:
Thanks for doing that test. i always knew that Pyrodex RS and the Pyrodex pellets were very close in velocity: My CVA StagHorn puts the bullets from both in the same group at 100 yards.

Thanks Jon, those figures are substantially different than the ones Randy the magician pulled out of his ..... hat.
Here are his figures (in case you forgot)
Pellets vs powder.
2 Pellets = 1889 F.P.S. 1902 Ft. Lbs.
3 Pellets = 2249 F.P.S. 2696 Ft. Lbs. (MAX LOAD)
100 grs. loose FFG = 1672 F.P.S. 1490 Ft. Lbs.
150 grs. loose FFG = 1879 F.P.S. 1882 Ft. Lbs. (MAX LOAD)

Good test. But wouldn't you just assume pellets would yield a bit more velocity?? You have considerably more surface area to ignite. So I would assume the "firing time" would also be slightly faster as well with pellets?? Wouldn't it??
More surface area would allow the powder to ignite faster. And faster in a smaller area will be hotter. And hotter would give slightly more pressure. Which yields higher fps.
Sounds to me like your findings are right on.
I would be more concerned about the accuracy.
I have not liked the pellets because you have to shoot that exact load. You can't change the charge(only slightly). And as stated above I have always been concerned about smashing the pellets. And smashing would also change the burn rate.
And after all burn rate is what we are really discussing here?? Right?? Tom.
