Thanks Kirby that confirms what many of us suspected. Its too bad they didn't buy the original patent rights to REAL BlackMag since MDM cant make it anymore even if they had a new plant. They had to surrender their license as part of the legal settlement related to the terrible accident.

I had high hopes of trying a version based on the last real BlackMag.

I just picked up a bottle today at Cabela's. I will be giving it a try in my sidelocks soon. Reports say it will also work in flinters. But I have my doubts on that. I will stick with good old BP in them.

wakeman says a no no in the flash pan.

bronko22000 11-04-2011 11:10 AM

Oh, I definately wouldn't use it in the flash pan. And I'm even skeptical about using it as the main charge.

i can't find where Wakeman tested Alliant MZ.

New for 2011, Alliant introduces its “Black MZ.” Made by American Pioneer for Alliant, it is vastly improved in consistency by Alliant's “test every lot” quality control. This product, like Pyrodex, is essentially a blackpowder performance equivalent. The stated benefits are better moisture resistance than Pyrodex, Triple Se7en, and so forth. It is also has better, easier ignition, so it can be used in all muzzleloaders with the exception of as a pan-powder in flintlocks, as far as I know. I believe that means percussion blackpowder handguns as well. Expect a full review of Alliant Black MZ in the near future.

BTW: Both Wakeman and Toby Bridges liked Goex Pinnacle:

i believe that Alliant MZ is Goex Pinnacle. Goex Pinnacle is my powder. i have two cans of Alliant MZ coming and will give a comparison test.

pinnacle was made by american pioneer for goex. That however was before goex was bought out by Hodgdon.

i'm aware of that.

Personally, I don't care who made it. I saw it on the shelf and though I would give it a try. If it performs as well as Pyrodex RS or FFg BP then I may just have to make the switch simply from the cleanliness aspect. If it doesn't work out, then I'm only out $24. And I will use it for plinking.

Compress it Bronko

Thanks for the advice MD. I just might take it out tomorrow and give it a try. I have a .50 that I put a peep sight on and a new T/C Seneca .45 that I may try out with 230 gr hand cast Maxiballs.
