Default common question

I'm sure this has been asked a hundred times. Does pyrodex have a shelf life? I have had one container for about 8 years open and one about 4 years factory sealed. Both have been properly stored and are not clumping or anything. Also what about no. 11 caps? I have had some of them for awhile. I only use this stuff in one rifle and I want to use it pretty soon so I thought I would ask. Thanks Doug.

I've never noticed any problems with old Pyrodex or old caps. Both should work fine.

You will know when you use it. If you open the jug and the Pyrodex is clumped.. you might be in for problems. Also if you shoot it and the sound, kick, accuracy stinks, and LOTS of smoke happen.. it might be time to get a new jug.

Now I have been shooting some Pyrodex that is over three years old and it is fine. But I am fussy how it is stored. In the original container, sealed as best as possible, in a cool dark area, it will keep a long time. The caps should be fine.

I've got a jug going on 5 years I think. Heck I only shoot say 5 shots a year lately. I've had no issues. I put celophane over the open jug then screw the cover on tight.

I read one test that tested Pyro after it's been opened. It was chronographed when opened, and again in 6 months. It lost fps in 6 months, and again in a year if I remember right.

That was opened though. I would think it would last a long time if unopened.

I think it does have a shelf life. So just to be safe, you better send it to me along with the caps for proper disposal.
Just kidding of course. I never heard anything about Pyro going bad unless it got contaminated with oil or excessive moisture. Same with caps. But like Cayugad said, you will know when you use it.

Thanks Fellas, I didnt realize I had this stuff so long. (all work and no play). I guess it's best to just shoot it all up! Good Hunting to all.
