My son shoots a CVA Wolf and it has always been a tack driver...until today.

1st of all, he shoots 80grns of BH209, an mmp24 sabot and a 250 grain Nosler HP .451 bullet. This has ALWAYS shot very well out of his gun. Well, today is opening day and before going out this afternoon we dicided to shoot it just to be sure that everything was ok. When he pulled the trigger there was an obvious hangfire and he hit 4" high. It did the same thing the next 3 shots.

I pulled the breechplug and cleaned it as best as I could and again, a hangfire but the second shot was dead in the bull and NO hangfire.

I thought that the problem was solved but a nice 8 pointer presented him a shot this afternoon and we had another hangfire and the buck trotted off.

Could someone PLEASE point me in the right direction? I read somewhere to work a 1/32" drill bit through the breechblug????? Is there a better quality breechblug out there on the market? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like your BP needs a good cleaning. The drill for the flash channel is the best way to clean it. You also need a tight fit for the primer.

With that said. CVA makes a BP for BH 209 now.

.451 bullet and a HPH24 sabot aren't a real good combo for BH209 unless you have a real tight barrel.

I would buy some 777 and re sight your gun in. After hunting season i would get a new breech plug for BH209.

Is that a Wolf with the speed breech plug? That would be a Wolf manufactured after 2010 I believe. If so, it should shoot black horn reliably. I am no expert like some on this forum, and having never had a hang fire with my wolf, I would suggest that you try the drill bit routine. If you drill out carbon in any amount it may have disrupted the flow of fire through the flame channel. I clean my plug with a drill bit after every range session with my wolf, and sometimes when I'm at the range shooting it to be sure the flame channel is clear.

I'll see if I can find the correct size drill bits on Monday and will also contact CVA rearding the new breech plugs. I really appreciate all of the replies fellas!!!!.

If you wish, i can cure your problem with a modified breech plug. This is a bad time for both of us, bein's how we are both in the midst of hunting season. Send me a pm, if you have enough time to allow for a fix.

A 3mm bit is used to clean the flash channel of your CVA breechplug.

This modified plug by Sabotloader has been flawless in my Encore Bergara barrels, 5/32 flash channel and drilled and tapped for a vent liner. I also have a few done by ronlaughlin (sorry no pic's) and it is flawless also. My .45 and .50 barrels go bang everytime! I put a metric o ring in the primer pocket so no fire escapes rearward for blowback free shooting. After each range session the vent liner is removed and a 5/32 bit is ran the entire length of the plug to clean the carbon out.

Not being an in-line person I can't give any advice on your breech plug. These inliner guys on here have been playing with theirs ever since BH209 came out because it is a bit harder to ignite. But right now, I think Grouse has the best idea to get you thru the hunting season. But I would go with Pyrodex RS over Triple 7. (I just never had any luck with T7)
You can worry about a breech modification later after the season.

I cleaned out the flash channel this morning with a drill bit and was amazed at the amount of powder that came out of it. I'll shoot it this afternoon and see what happens. Thanks to all!!!
