Things to do on a crappy, rainy day!

I agree. I currently have an old Remington Targetmaster single shot .22 (from 1947) I bought at a yard sale that I'm bringing back to life. It was missing the butt plate and was well used, but not beat up. It shoots great as well! I got a replacement butt plate from Numrich and fitted it. Other than that, I'm just going to refinish the stock. I scraped away the old finish and have given it one light sanding so far, but that's as far as I've gotten. I gave $50 for it and I have another $25 in the plate and screws. I recently saw one in a local gun shop that was MUCH rougher than mine and it was also missing the rear sight. The guy wanted $150 for it so I know I didn't do too bad!!.....BPS

I use Zip Strip on the stocks and finish them with Birchwood Casey sealer and Tru -Oil. Make sure that you raise the grain on the stock two or three times before you apply a finish. It kills me when I run into gun at a gun shop like one I have reconditioned and they are asking two to three times what I spent on the one I worked on. I have a Excel (Iver-Johnson Champion) 410 in my cabinet that I have fifty bucks total in and the big chain gun shop near here has one that isn't in as good as mine and they are asking $250.00 for it. Theirs is marked as Iver-Johnson and mine is a store brand. Same gun. You can pick up house brand guns for a lot less than what you would pay for one that has a big name on it.
